Of major economic importance is the greenstone belt for primary gold and other deposits. The main metal bearing pegmatite bodies are found in northeast Suriname. Cassiterite, columbite-tantalite, beryl and amblygonite have been mined. Other base metal occurrences such as: Fe, Al, Au, Cu, Fe, Mn, Cr and other minerals. 14 The Greenstone Belt Suriname's gold deposits are part of the Guiana Shield, a geological formation Greenstone extending over 415,000 km2 of Venezuela, the Guianas, and Brazil.
