• ISO 16622:2002 - Meteorology -- Sonic anemometers/
thermometers -- Acceptance test methods for mean wind
measurements (WG2)
• ISO 17713-1:2007 - Meteorology -- Wind measurements -Part 1: Wind tunnel test methods for rotating anemometer
performance (WG1)
• ISO 17714:2007 - Meteorology -- Air temperature
measurements -- Test methods for comparing the
performance of thermometer shields/screens and defining
important characteristics (WG3)
• ISO 28902-1:2012 - Air quality -- Environmental
meteorology -- Part 1: Ground-based remote sensing of visual
range by lidar (WG6)

Referring to the 2008 Agreement (Chapter V.6 of WMO
No. 60), WMO Proposed two issues for collaboration
between WMO and ISO:
1. CIMO-endorsed classification scheme for observing
systems on land
2. ISO/28902-2: “Ground-Based Remote Sampling by
Doppler Wind Lidars”

1. CIMO-endorsed classification scheme for observing
systems on land (baseline)
(WMO-No. 8, Part 1, Chapter 1, Annex 1D)
• Scheme intended to improve quality of observations,
particularly for climate purposes, recognizing the
importance of proper instrument siting
• WMO 64th Executive Council (June/July 2012) noted
care needed to take into account situation of, and
possible impact on, National Meteorological and
Hydrological Services (NMHSs)

2. ISO/28902-2: “Ground-Based Remote Sampling by
Doppler Wind Lidars” (project approved Nov 2011)
• WMO approached ISO to develop this as a common
WMO/ISO Standard
• Our WG6 team of experts is currently working on a
Committee Draft of this item and welcomes more
participation from manufacturers and the user
community – please contact WG6 Secretary Simon

ISO Working Group
• Each Standard development is conducted in a
Working Group (WG) within the
Subcommittee.
• The WG includes:
– Convenor (Chair) and a Secretary, jointly
responsible for the process;
– Technical Experts (P and O members)

Progress and More Challenges
SC5 is pleased to see real progress in further
developing ISO Standards in Meteorology with
more participation by WMO experts
More Challenges:
• Formal ISO participation is through national
standards organizations and voting is limited to
“P” members – but experts may work directly in
Working Groups
• Copyright and distribution (Who? Cost?)
• Identify willing experts - this may be you!!!
