Learning goal (7.E.1.5): I will be able to explain the
influence of global winds and the jet stream on
weather conditions.
Due Today: Flashcards, Sandy vs. Joplin chart, Tornado vs.

Wind and Weather
The atmosphere has wind
patterns.
Uneven heating causes air to
move through pressure
differences (high -> low pressure)
Earth’s rotation affects wind
direction.
There are three belts of global
wind: trade winds, the
westerlies, and the easterlies.
Jet streams flow near the top of
the troposphere.

This web quest introduces several types of wind or wind
factors that influence our weather:
• Coriolis effect
• Trade winds
• Westerlies
• Jet Stream
Learning goal (7.E.1.5): I will be able to explain the
influence of global winds and the jet stream on weather
conditions.
Purpose of Web Quest
Create a 4-flap foldable to be used to describe the winds or wind
factors that affect our weather.
1)
Your foldable should include the title, Wind and Weather, along with
your name, date and core. Put this on the back of the foldable.
The 4 flaps should be labeled on the outside of the flap with each of the
winds or factors:
2)
•
•
•
•
Coriolis effect
trade winds
westerlies,
jet stream
3) Include the following information for each one on the inside flap:
• Description of wind or wind factor
• Direction of air movement
• How wind affects weather
4) Due Wednesday October 16th.

Resources
Investigate Coriolis Effect
1) Read the investigation on page A49.
2) Write the “What Do You Think? And the “Challenge”
questions in your notebook.
3) You will need one partner.
4) Investigation materials are near the bulletin board.
5) Be sure you have read the procedure before you come to
the table!
