JET STREAM
• The jet stream is a high-speed,
meandering wind current, generally
moving from a westerly direction at
speeds often exceeding 400 kilometers
(250 miles) per hour at altitudes of 10 to
15 kilometers (6 to 9 miles).
JET STREAM
“Westerlies”
Between 30°and 60° winds blow from
the west towards the east. These winds
are named by the direction which they
come FROM not toward.
Because of this, most of our storms move
from West to East.

TORNADO SAFETY
• Go to a basement.
• If you do not have a basement, go to an interior
room without windows on the lowest floor such as
a bathroom or closet.
• If you live in a mobile home get out. They offer
little protection against tornadoes.
• Get out of automobiles. Do not try to outrun a
tornado in your car, leave it immediately.
• If you’re outside, go to a ditch or low lying area
and lie flat in it.
LIGHTNING SAFETY
• NO PLACE outside is safe when thunderstorms are in
the area!!
• If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike
you.
• When you hear thunder, immediately move to safe
shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing
or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up.
•Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off
porches.
