FRONTS COLD FRONT WARM FRONT STATIONARY FRONT JET STREAM • The jet stream is a high-speed, meandering wind current, generally moving from a westerly direction at speeds often exceeding 400 kilometers (250 miles) per hour at altitudes of 10 to 15 kilometers (6 to 9 miles). JET STREAM “Westerlies” Between 30°and 60° winds blow from the west towards the east. These winds are named by the direction which they come FROM not toward. They offer little protection against tornadoes. • Get out of automobiles. Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car, leave it immediately. • If you’re outside, go to a ditch or low lying area and lie flat in it. LIGHTNING SAFETY • NO PLACE outside is safe when thunderstorms are in the area!! • If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. • When you hear thunder, immediately move to safe shelter: a substantial building with electricity or plumbing or an enclosed, metal-topped vehicle with windows up. •Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
