‘Hardness Factor’
Mohs Scale of Hardness
 The universal standard of hardness of non-metallic elements/minerals
 Mohs scale defines 10” degrees of hardness; designated by a mineral. 10 being the hardest, 1 being the least hard.
 Hardness is determined by an elements ability to scratch any lower numbered element within the scale
 Ceramics are made up of Aluminum Oxide. Aluminum Oxide is a “9” on the scale which means that it is 6 degrees
harder than Calcite “3” (Calcium) – capable of producing calcium deposits – will not effect or damage ceramic disc
cartridges. In fact, the cartridge will actually pulverize elements scoring lower on Mohs scale. Diamonds are the only
elements capable of scratching ceramic.
 Point of fact – Mohs Scale of Hardness does not measure hardness in metals, however, ceramics are 2 times harder
than steel!
