What is INBRE? Continued • The Congressional intent of the IDeA program is to enhance geographical distribution of research funds and increase research capacity. • The INBRE Summer Research Program is an initiative within a multimillion dollar grant with Dr. Darrin Akins as the lead principal investigator. Paycheck information • Everyone must complete a direct deposit form in order to get paid. • You will receive $5,000 for your participation in the program. • You will receive 3 equal payments. The exact amount is determined by your W-4. • Your paycheck will be deposited directly into your bank account on the 15th day of June, July, and August. Responsible Conduct of Research • The National Institute of Health requires individuals funded by their grants to participate in responsible conduct of research training. For the OK-INBRE Undergraduate Summer Research Program, this is accomplished through an online tool sponsored by the University of Illinois’ Ethics CORE. • Before May 13, you are required to complete module 1. It should take about one hour. You may stop in the middle of a module, save it, and go back at a later time. Responsible Conduct of Research Continued • • • • • • • 1. Go to http://nationalethicscenter.org/register to set up an Ethics Core account 2. Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email. You must click on the link provided in the email to confirm your registration. 3. Confirming your registration will take you to the Ethics Core login page. Login using the user name and password you chose. You may also login by going to the homepage (http://nationalethicscore.org) and clicking the login link at the top of the page. 4. Once you are logged in, click on “RCR Modules from CMDITR” in the top menu bar. To start the tutorials, select “continue tutorials.” You may also preview the tutorials by selecting “preview tutorials.” 5. You will be asked for the group that you are associated with to begin the tutorials. Select “Oklahoma IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence.” Click “Register” 6. Begin tutorials. OUHSC Required Training • HIPAA Training (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). Required for all students. http://www.ouhsc.edu/hipaa/ • Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Awareness Training. Required for all students except those who took training last year. https://learn.ouhsc.edu/ • Annual Safety Training. Required for all students. Students attending OUHSC, OMRF, or enrichment sessions will have speaker for this and do not need to take training online. https://www.ouhsc.edu/ehso/training/new_logon.asp OUHSC Email Account • You will be sent an email from OU Health Sciences Center’s IT department. This will be sent to the email address provided on your application. • This email will contain information needed to set-up an OUHSC email account including userid and password. Please be on the lookout for this. Your OUHSC userid and password are required to access OUHSC training modules. • During your first week of the program, please complete all necessary training. Once you have completed the OUHSC training, please email me. • You will use this same email account for your abstract submission Boot Camp Information • All Redlands, OCCC and non-biotech TCC students are required to attend the Boot Camp unless they attended last year. • The Boot Camp will be held at Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) on May 19-23, 2014. • OCCC is located at the juncture of I-240 and I-44 at 7777 S. May Avenue. • The Boot Camp will be held in the Main Building, Room 1C7. Students should park in Lot G which is on the south side of the main building (one without the clock tour), and proceed to SEM entry 3. Regardless of your home school, your credit will be issued through OCCC. I have enrollment packets for all non-OCCC students. I have registration packets for OCCC students. Enroll/register PRIOR to the beginning of the boot camp. The grant will be billed directly for the cost of the boot camp. If you are from outside the metropolitan area and need housing for the boot camp, we will pay for a hotel. Please email me. You can find maps of OCCC’s campus at www.occc.edu. You can either bring your lunch or eat at the school cafeteria. College Credit for Summer Experience • Everyone must indicate on their orientation form if they would like to receive college credit. You are not required to get college credit. • Please note that no one should register for any other day courses during the summer. • All OCCC and Redlands Students not assigned to OUHSC/OMRF can receive credit through OCCC. You will enroll during your boot camp, and your instructor will have directions on what you need to do. The grant will be billed directly for the course. Credit at OU Health Sciences Center • • • Students assigned to OUHSC/OMRF can obtain 3 credit hours from OUHSC. Students assigned to UCO and OU have the option of receiving credit from OUHSC as well. Please note, we do not pay for mileage or parking. To receive credit, all students must attend all the scheduled activities at OUHSC. There are Friday enrichment sessions with guest speakers that cover such topics as how to write an abstract, prepare a scientific poster, and discussions on exciting new research. If you are assigned to UCO or OU and want to receive credit from OUHSC, indicate this on the orientation form. If you are enrolled in the course and are a permanent resident, you will need to provide your permanent residence card and naturalization documents to Elsa Higuchi. She must view them personally. If you are enrolled in the course and are a US citizen born outside of the United States, Elsa will need to see a native born abroad birth certificate. A copy of a certified birth certificate will be sufficient. Insurance and Credit at OUHSC • • • • • • The Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education require you to have health insurance if you are enrolled in a course at OUHSC. 1. If you have insurance, provide your insurance card for us to copy. 2. If you don’t have insurance and want to purchase it, please contact me. I will let you know once it is online and available to purchase. 3. If you do not have insurance and don’t want to purchase it, you can either sign the waiver to still participate in the enrichment sessions with no credit at OUHSC, or you can choose to not sign the waiver and not participate in enrichment sessions. 4. This last option is only for students who do not have insurance. Indicate on the orientation form that you don’t have insurance but would like credit for the course at your home institution. You will still have to sign the waiver to participate in the enrichment sessions, but I will try and get you credit through your home school. 5. If you are an international student assigned to OUHSC and your home institution requires you to enroll in a course at your home institution, then you can still participate in the enrichment sessions at OUHSC without credit if you provide proof of insurance or sign the waiver. How to apply for credit at OUHSC • • • • • Next week, please create an account and complete the online application at the following link - https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=uok-hs. Under the “Admissions Information” tab select Graduate College, INBRE Program, for the Summer 2014 term. The course you will be enrolled in is BMSC 4113. Once you click on the submit button it will automatically direct you to the fee payment page. A $40 application fee is required and must be paid online by either credit card or Echeck. After completing the payment, please click on the submit button one final time to actually submit your application. Complete this and agree with the terms. Forward the final confirmation page (looks like a receipt) to Anita-Bennett@ouhsc.edu. Your application is not complete until you do this. McNair Scholars should contact Anita Bennett for directions related to application fees which are exempt. Registration for the course will end April 25. It will be billed to the grant. College Credit for Summer Experience Tulsa Community College • • To enroll, you need to provide me your CWID. Please put your CWID on the orientation form. I will forward this to Lyn Kent who will then approve you to enroll. Once she has done that, you can enroll online or on-campus just like any other class. The section is: BIOT 2993, Selected Topics in Biotechnology, CRN 30357. When you enroll, payment must be made the same day or you must sign up for the summer payment plan. Students who do not may be dropped from classes each night. If this happens, the student can reenroll at least one time before a hold is placed on enrollment, requiring student contact with TCC Advising to remove hold. Beginning in May, a payment shopping cart will be part of the enrollment process. The INBRE grant will reimburse you for the class. College Credit for Summer Experience Northeastern State University • NSU-Students can receive credit at NSU. You must contact Dr. Jessica Martin to enroll in the course, BIOL 4413, for the summer. Martinj@nsuok.edu • Please give her your NSU ID Number when you email her. • NSU will invoice INBRE for your class, and INBRE will pay the school directly. College Credit for Summer Experience UCO • You can enroll in the following independent study course: BIO 4930, CRN 35990, IS: INBRE Summer Research Program • A current UCO student can simply enroll on-line. To help limit enrollment to only INBRE summer research students, the system will direct the student to obtain permission to enroll. The student will need to call, email, or visit the Biology Department office (974-5911, Sharon Lafave, slafave@uco.edu; Howell Hall 200), identify themselves as a participant in the INBRE Summer Research program, and request permission to enroll. Biology will then lift the requirement, and the student can continue with the on-line enrollment. Only 2 credit hours are available. For Chemistry students, please contact the Chair, Dr. Luis Montes. College Credit for Summer Experience ECU and SWOSU • East Central University Students: You will work with Dr. Stephen Fields, sfields@ecok.edu, to get enrolled in a course. ECU will invoice INBRE for the associated costs of the course and will then apply the reimbursed amount to the student’s account. • SWOSU Students: Enroll in Independent Study CHEM 4002 or BIO 4002. If you receive credit through Chemistry, you will need to submit a paper on your work. You should be able to modify your poster to fulfill this requirement. College Credit at Cameron and SEOSU • Cameron students need to enroll in BIOL 4123 – Special Studies (Course record number 30069) with Dr. Carla Guthridge, carlag@cameron.edu. Please work with Dr. Guthridge directly. You must attend all enrichment sessions at OUHSC. There are entrances off N. Everest Ave. and N. Lottie Ave. The gate should be open. • OMRF will provide parking for its students. Contact your mentor prior to the beginning of the program. Also, see HR at OMRF on the first day of the program. Parking at Other Locations For those students located at UCO, parking is $25 for the entire summer. You must apply in person anytime after May 9th. The parking office is located on the 3rd floor of the Nigh University Center. The Nigh Center is on Garland Godfrey Drive, which intersects 2nd Street in Edmond. For all other students, please contact your mentor to inquire about parking at the school you are assigned. Make arrangements prior to the beginning of the program. For those students not located at OUHSC, these will be emailed to you. • Your mentor is responsible for the costs of preparing your poster. • Please review map for parking and event directions. • We will need your abstract for the book prior to the poster session. Abstracts are due by 10:00 am on July 7. Awards for Community College Students • The two community college students with the best posters will win a $2000 transfer scholarship. To be eligible, you must be transferring to a four year college in the fall of 2014. • We will sponsor two qualifying students to attend the SACNAS Conference. SACNAS is a society of scientists dedicated to fostering the success of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American scientists—from college students to professionals—in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership. “Creativity, Vision, and Drive: Toward Full Representation in STEM" Los Angeles, California, October 15-19, 2014 Award Opportunities • On Thursday, July 17, there will be a contest to select the top four posters from all the summer programs (INBRE, NARCH, SCC, and SURE). What to do prior to May 20th • For those wanting credit at OUHSC, apply online. • Complete parking permit request for those assigned to OUHSC. • Take the Responsible Conduct of Research Tutorial. • Everyone needs to have contacted their mentor prior to the beginning of the program. Find out where their lab is located. This is often in a different location than their office. • Please complete the training tutorials during the first week of the program First Day of Program for OUHSC & OMRF • We will have another orientation meeting on the first day of the program, May 20 • Students need to meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Bird Library Auditorium, #299. • After the meeting, we will go get student i.d. cards, parking permits, have a tour of campus, eat lunch, take photographs, then go to labs. We will have a casual get acquainted reception from 4:00-5:00 pm.
