FAO Strategic Objectives

FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger and its
major focus is on agriculture, forestry, fisheries and
related areas.
FAO has 5 strategic objectives namely:

SO1 - Eradicate hunger, food insecurity and
malnutrition

SO2 - Increase and improve provision of goods and
services from agriculture, forestry and fisheries in a
sustainable manner

Achieving food security for all is at the heart of FAO's
efforts - to make sure people have regular access to
enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives
Gather, process and disseminate information relating to
nutrition, food and agriculture
Promote and recommend national/international action
with respect to nutritional, food and agriculture
interventions
Provide technical assistance and capacity building to
governments upon request

emphasis on International Development Cooperation)

“Capacity Building for South African Professionals in
the field of agriculture and food security”
The project is funded by RSA Government
Objectives
 Increase knowledge and skills of a cadre of DoA
officers for more effective management of DAFF
international development cooperation programmes
(supporting food security and agricultural rehabilitation)
 Capacity building for effective policies, strategies and
service delivery in support of emerging farmers
 Currently busy with mid-term review of the project

CAADP




FAO is supporting Department of Agriculture,
Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) to develop the
CAADP Process.
Expected results are Policy briefs reviewed.
A report on priority investment areas along the four
CAADP pillars.
CAADP implementation roadmap with an
accompanying monitoring and accountability
framework and related capacity strengthened.

Public Understanding of Aquaculture
Objective
 at providing a comprehensive market and policy
analysis, to identify the public understanding of
aquaculture and to develop a five-year aquaculture
awareness programme.
 The results are-Aquaculture reference database, a
searchable web based resource, with an
accompanying brief
 A framework outlining a five year aquaculture
awareness programme

“Regional Dissemination of Knowledge,
Information and Experiences on Conservation
Agriculture (CA) Activities in Southern Africa”
Objectives
 to enhance household and national food security
while combating the potential impact of climate
change by promoting sound and sustainable
farming practices
 to build awareness of the potential benefits of CA
in countries where it is not widely practiced or
understood
 To document and analyse past and current CA
activities in the region to identify best practices
and lessons learned

Telefood Projects
 FAO programme established to finance
micro-projects. Objective: to finance microprojects (production inputs) in developing
countries such as poultry and communal
gardens.
 Purpose-to help poor people free
themselves from their daily struggle to get
enough food to eat. It aims at improving the
capacity of poor and vulnerable families to
produce more food and generate cash
income for more sustainable livelihoods
