This will be followed by a lecture by the former (and last) leader of the Socialist Unity Party of East Germany, Egon Krenz, will give a lecture on the “Opening of the border on 9 November 1989 and its consequences”. In this film by Stanley Kubrick, an insane general triggers a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically try to stop. This film will be introduced with a short lecture about the film and its topic, given by Coen van Zwol, historian and film critic at the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad. Michiel Bart Hijmans, Royal Netherlands Army Lt. Gen. (ret.) Ton van Loon and Royal Netherlands Air Force Col. Robert Adang will talk about military threats during the Cold War and current threats in relation to the Cold War. This session will be moderated by Royal Netherlands Air Force Maj. Gen. (ret.) Carel Hilderink. Wednesday, 5 November 2014 Activity Summary Date, time and number of participants Panel Discussion A panel discussion with Maj. Gen. (ret.) Kees Homan, Professor André Gerrits (UL) and Professor Herman Hoen (RuG) about the consequences and the historical meaning of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This session will deal with the challenges of the transformation process in Eastern Europe after the Fall of the Wall. Each speaker will deal with a specific topic, followed by a discussion among the panel and a plenary discussion. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Jan Hoffenaar (UU). A drama, based on a Texas congressman Charlie Wilson's covert dealings in Afghanistan, where his efforts to assist rebels in their war with the Soviets have some unforeseen and long-reaching effects. The film will be introduced by Professor Doeko Bosscher (RUG), who will give a short lecture on the film and elaborate on the topic. In 1984 East Berlin, an agent of the secret police, conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives. This film will be introduced by Dr. Frans Willem Lantink (UU), who will give a short lecture on the film and its topic. This photo exhibition will be created by photographer Peter Ruiter.
