Trøndelag boasts a rich and varied nature, and only a short drive takes you from
the mountain plains, down through forested valleys and wide grain districts, out to
the coast, or from the rolling mountain formations of the interior to the wild and
naked mountains on the ocean’s edge, from peaceful fjord paradises to the most
exposed and hardy regions. Man has lived here for thousands and thousands of
years. The many rock carvings and other remains, among them the largest burial
area in Scandinavia in Oppdal, show that the region was historically, for a very long
time, centrally significant for Norway. Interesting rock carvings are also found in
Stjørdal, Frosta og Steinkjer. There was large scale cultivation of grain, iron mining,
and a very early legislative centre (Frostatingslagen). And historic sites predominate.
Nidaros (today: Trondheim)was the first “capital” of the country, King Olav Haraldsson
fell at the battle of Stiklestad in 1030, in his attempt to regain Trøndelag and the
kingdom. He was canonised and worshipped as one of the most important saints in
Northern Europe. This made the Archbishop’s seat at Nidaros into one of the major
centres of culture of its time and it became a very popular destination for pilgrimages.
Nidaros Cathedral is also one of the most magnificent of Scandinavian churches. St.
Olav’s Day (29 July) is celebrated every year in the play “Spelet om Heilag Olav” at
Stiklestad, and in the large scale Olav Festival in Trondheim. The old buildings of the
mining community at Røros are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Trøndelag also
boasts old palaces (Austrått, Steinviksholm), old forts and the largest wooden
building in Scandinavia (Stiftsgården), – not forgetting new cultural and sports
arenas, including ski arena for World Nordic Ski Championships in 1997. There are
a wealth of opportunities for lovers of open-air life, hunting and fishing, renowned
salmon rivers, – and a large variety of cultural opportunities all year round.
Trøndelag har en rik og variert natur, og korte bilturer fører deg fra fjellvidder,
gjennom skogdaler og breie kornbygder ut til kysten, fra rolige fjellformasjoner
til ville og nakne berg utmed havet, fra lune idyller i fjordene til de mest barske og værharde strøk. Her har mennesker bodd i mange tusen år, og et stort
antall helleristninger og andre fornfunn, bl.a. Nordens største gravfelt i Oppdal, viser at landsdelen tidlig og gjennom lange perioder hadde en sentral
betydning i Norge. Rike forekomster av helleristninger finnes også i Stjørdal,
Frosta og Steinkjer. Historien forteller om stor kornproduksjon, store jernvinningsanlegg og tidlig etablering av et fast lovsamfunn (Frostatingslagen).
Og – her vrimler det av historiske steder. Kong Olav Haraldsson, som falt på
Stiklestad i 1030 i forsøket på å gjenvinne Trøndelag og riket, ble kanonisert og tilbedt som en av de mest betydningsfulle helgener i nord-Europa.
Erkebispesetet i Nidaros fikk med dette status som et av de store kultursentra
med en enorm valfart av pilgrimer. Nidarosdomen er da også det prektigste
kirkebygg i Norden, og Nidaros ble landets første “hovedstad”. Olav minnes
hvert år ved Olsok (29. juli) i “Spelet om Heilag Olav” på Stiklestad og under
de omfattende Olavsfestdagene i Trondheim. Trøndelag har ellers gamle slott
(Austrått, Steinviksholm), gamle festningsanlegg og Nordens største trehus
(Stiftsgården), ved siden av nye kulturbygg og idrettsanlegg, bl.a. skianlegg
hvor det ble avholdt Ski-VM i 1997. Her er rike muligheter for friluftsliv, jakt og
fiske, kjente lakseelver – og her er allsidige kulturtilbud året rundt. Nevnes bør
også den gamle bebyggelsen i Bergstaden Røros, som står på UNESCOs liste
som et av de mest bevaringsverdige stedene i verden.

"From coast to coast" is a forum of cooperation linking 8 fortress museums in Trøndelag in MidNorway and Jämtland and Västernorrland in northern Sweden.
"Fra kyst till kust" er et samarbeidsforum for 8 festningsmuseer i Trøndelag og i svenske Jämtland
og Västernorrland.
Geographically, the museums stretch from Austrått Fort at the mouth of Trondheimsfjorden to Hemsö
Fortress at Bottenvika. Historically, they span from 1682 (Kristiansten Fortress in Trondheim) to the
Cold War (Hemsö).
Geografisk strekker museene seg fra Austrått Fort ved innløpet til Trondheimsfjorden til Hemsö
festning ved Bottenvika. Det historiske spennet kan illustreres ved å peke på Kristiansten festning fra
1682, og Hemsö fra den kalde krigens tid.
The cooperation covers, among other things, information about and advertising for historical fortifications that are attracting a growing audience. Schools have realised that the fortresses can illustrate
and enhance the pupils’ understanding of history. For the public at large, a visit to one or more of the
fortresses is useful for understanding local and national history. By visiting fortresses on both sides
of the border, the visitor can acquire a broader perspective of the periods of hostility and alliance
between Sweden and Norway through history.
Samarbeidet omfatter bl.a. informasjon om og reklame for et felt som omfattes av stadig større
interesse. Skoleverket har innsett at befestningene kan anskueliggjøre og lette elevenes historieforståelse. For den interesserte menigmann er besøk på en eller flere festninger egnet til å forstå både
lokal og nasjonal historie. Ved å besøke festninger på begge sider av riksgrensen, vil en få et større
perspektiv, med belysning av både fiendskap og fellesskap mellom Sverige og Norge gjennom historien.

Ørland: Austrått Fort

Austrått Fort formed part of the coastal defence for Nazi Germany’s “Festung Norwegen” [Fortress
Norway] and guarded the approaches to the German North Atlantic U-boat fleet based in Trondheim.
Austrått Fort is located at Lundahaugen in connection with the Austråttlunden nature reserve, and
close to Austrått Manor and Austråttborgen (castle).
Trondheim: The Armoury Museum

The Armoury Museum, or Rustkammeret, is situated in the Archbishop’s Palace adjacent to Nidaros
Cathedral and is one of the oldest museums in Norway. The museum comprises an army museum
and a resistance museum with special focus on Trondelag’s military history.
Ørland: Austrått Fort

Stjørdal: Hegra Fortress

Ingstadkleiva Fort, later known as Hegra Fortress, was built in 1909-11 and its purpose was to defend
against an invasion from Sweden over Storlien-Meråker. Today, the fortification houses a museum
that tells the story of the resistance against German occupation forces in the spring and early summer
of 1940.
Verdal: The Værdal fortifications

The majority of these large fortifications were designed to defend against invasions from Sweden. At
the bottom of the valley is the remains of Stene Skanse. At the entrance to Inndalen is Bergugleberget, with Vaterholmen camp further up, while the main fortification built into the mountain is found
in Sogna.
Valsjöbyn, Krokoms Municipality: Skansen Klintaberg

This fortification was built in 1943-44 and consists of cannon positions with a subterranean military
installation built to defend against a German invasion from Norway. The location of Klintenberg is
well-chosen from a defensive point of view since it lies on a steep rock escarpment with the Valsjøen
lake directly below. The facility was operational until the 1980s as part of the Swedish defence system.
Östersund: Teknikland

Teknikland is located at Brunflo on the outskirts of Östersund. The museum, with its aircraft and engines from different eras, aims to show everything within the theme that has been in use in Jämtland.
One section is dedicated to the war efforts of women, with special focus on aircraftwomen.
Härnösand: Hemsö Fortress

Stjørdal: Hegra festning

Ingstadkleiva fort, senere kjent som Hegra festning, ble bygd i i 1909-11 og hadde som formål å
forsvare innfartsveien fra Sverige over Storlien - Meråker. Festningen rommer i dag et museum som
forteller historien til de som holdt stand mot tyske okkupasjonstropper våren og forsommeren 1940.
Verdal: De Værdalske Befestninger

Her ligger store befestninger - de fleste med forsvar mot inntrengere fra Sverige som hensikt.
I bunnen av dalen ligger restene av Stene Skanse, og i munningen av Inndalen ligger Bergugleberget, mens Vaterholmen leir ligger leger opp, og i sognaligger hovedfestningen med sine store
fjellhaller.

Skansen ble bygd i årene 1943-44 og består av kanonstillinger med underjordiske rom og ganger,
som skulle hindre tyske styrker i å gå inn fra norsk side. Skansens plassering er velvalgt ut fra
forsvarssynspunkt, der den ligger i et bratt berg med Valsjøen rett nedenfor. Skansen var i bruk til
utpå 1980-tallet, som del av det svenske forsvaret.
Östersund: Teknikland.

Ved Brunflo utenfor Östersund ligger Teknikland, med fly og motorer fra ulike epoker.
Museet forsøker å vise alt innenfor temaet som har vært i bruk i Jämtland. En avdeling viser den
innsats som kvinner utførte, spesielt med fokus mot lottene.
Härnösand: Hemsö Fästning

En liten øy i Ångermanselvas munning har i århundrer vært av stor strategisk betydning.
Nå ligger et enormt kanonbatteri her, bygd under den kalde krigen. Store underjordiske haller og
ganger.
A small island in the mouth of the Ångermanälven river has for centuries been of major strategic
significance. It is now the location of an enormous cannon battery built here during the Cold War.
This once top secret coastal defence facility contains a large subterranean military installation.

Chancellor Ove Bjelke completed this renaissance palace in 1656. The palace is built around the
original 12th century chapel (gårdskirken) and is richly adorned with stone work, elegant external galleries and wooden sculptures. The interior is furnished in baroque style and is extensively decorated
with wood carvings. Open for groups outside normal hours by arrangement.
I 1656 fullførte Ove Bjelke, Rikskansler i Norge dette renessanseslottet. Gårdskirken fra 1100- tallet ble utgangspunkt for det nye anlegget. Slottet er prydet med rikt steinhuggerarbeide, vakre

Nord-Norge omfatter fylkene Nordland, Troms og Finnmark. Arealet på
nesten 113.000 km2 utgjør ca. 1/3-del av Norge, mens folketallet på
ca. 450.000 er noe over 1/8-del. Landsdelen er lang og smal, det er over
1000 km i luftlinje fra syd for Polarsirkelen til østgrensen mot Russland.
Til tross for de lange avstander er landsdelen en enhet, bundet sammen
av sterke kysttradisjoner – og et visst motsetningsforhold til “søringan”.
Landsdelen ligger i spenningsfeltet mellom nord og sør, øst og vest,
dominert av norsk, samisk og kvensk/finsk kultur. Det kvenske innslaget er
særlig merkbart i deler av Finnmark og Troms, samtidig har det alltid vært
en sterk kontakt langs kysten sørover til Vestlandet. Samene er landsdelens
urbefolkning. Til tross for sterk fornorsk-ning er samisk kultur levende,
preget av stadig voksende selvfølelse. Den opprinnelige samiske busetning
var basert på fangst og fiske i kyst- og fjordstrøkene, i vekselvirkning med
utnyttelse av innlandets ressurser. I de indre strøk dominerer ennå reindriften.
Men – i hovedsak er landsdelen knyttet til kysten og sjøen; havet var den
viktigste kommunikasjonslinjen og det store matfatet – og Golfstrømmen
gir bra livsvilkår med jorbruksmuligheter så langt mot nord. Kulturminnene
i landsdelen er preget og formet av vekselspillet mellom land og hav, noe
man må ha i minne for å forstå utviklingen fra det før-industrielle samfunn
til idag. Nå er også primærnæringene i tilbakegang, mens tjenesteytende
virksomheter og turisme er i utvikling.
Northern Norway is made up of the three counties of Nordland, Troms and
Finnmark. They cover nearly 113,000 km2, which is around 1/3 of the country,
although the population, at around 450,000, is only one eighth. The region is
long and narrow, over 1,000 km as the crow flies, from south of the Arctic Circle
eastwards towards Russia. The effects of the Gulf Stream mean that agriculture is
still possible this far north. Despite the enormous distances, the region is homogeneous, held together by its strong coastal traditions and a somewhat reserved
attitude towards the “southerners”. The region is gripped by the tensions
between north and south, east and west, and is dominated by Norwegian,
Sami and the Kveni/Finnish cultures. The Kveni influence is specially noticeable
in parts of Finnmark and Troms. There has, at the same time, been strong contact
between peoples all along the coast, as far down as western Norway. The Sami are
the indigenous population of the region. Despite strong pressure to “Norwegianise”,
the Sami culture is still vital, and is characterised by growing self awareness. Reindeer
herding dominates the districts of the interior, although the original Sami communities
were based on hunting and fishing in the coast and fjord regions, combining this
with exploitation of the resources of the interior. The region is mainly bound to the
coast and the ocean, with the sea being both the most important communication
route and the larder. The heritage resources of the region are marked and formed by
the interaction of the land and sea, and this must be remembered when you try to
understand the development from the pre-industrial society until today. The primary
industries are now declining, while service industries and tourism are growing.

The Norwegian Aviation Museum opened in 1994 and is a national museum for aviation history.
The museum is located in a building shaped like a giant propeller, and covers military and civil
aviation history from the first flimsy flying machines made from canvas, wire and bamboo to today’s
jumbo jets that cross oceans and continents in hours. Regular guided tours during the summer, with
special tours for children. Café Gidsken, flight simulator, museums shop, good parking facilities.
Norsk Luftfartsmuseum åpnet i 1994 og er et nasjonalt museum for luftfartshistorie. Museet er
lokalisert i en bygning formet som en gigantisk propell, og omfatter militær og sivil luftfartshistorie,
fra de første skrøpelige farkoster av lerretsduk, pianotråd og bambus, frem til våre dagers uhyrer som
jager over verdenshavene på noen timer. I sommersesongen tilbyr vi faste omvisning med guide og

Cultural top up? An exciting modern museum building, an 18th century vicarage and a beautiful
13th century medieval church – these are just some of the unique things you will find at Alstahaug.
Alstahaug lies at the foot of the Seven Sisters mountains, about 20 km south of Sandnessjøen (FV
17). The poet priest Petter Dass (1647–1707) worked here from 1689 until his death and he is closely
connected with this place. With his very special poetic style, marked as it is by the nature and life of
northern Norway, Petter Dass stands as one of the most important baroque Danish-Norwegian poets.
The museum conveys the diversity of Peter Dass's position in our cultural heritage, with lines to such
relevant themes as religion in today's society. Café, museum shop, free parking. Welcome!

Lofotr Viking Museum is an on-site museum, based around the excavations of the largest Viking house
ever uncovered. The reconstructed, 83 m long chieftain´s house is impressive. The museum also have
Viking ships, boathouse and smithy. Exhibitions, film, demonstration of hand craft and activities (15.06
– 15.08) lets the visitor take part in a living Viking history. For groups: special arrangement such as

Hailed by many as Norway’s most picturesque location, Reine on the westernmost island of
Moskenesøy in the Lofotens is the frame around Galleri Eva Harr. In newly renovated and elegantly
designed premises in the former Reine school, the artist exhibits around 40 major works comprising
20 oil paintings and a similar number of graphic prints. In addition will artist Terje Langås and textile
artist Ellen Lenvik exhibit their work in this year's summerexhibition.". The gallery is open daily

Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum er landets yngste kunstmuseum, stiftet i 1985. Museumsbygningen ligger i Tromsøs eldste gateløp, med fasaden mot Roald Amundsens plass. Museet viser forskjellige
temporære utstillinger av både historisk og samtidig kunst. Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum har et særskilt
ansvar for å trekke frem kunst med tilknytning til den nordnorske landsdelen. I museets annen etasje
vises en fast utstilling med verker fra samlingen, der sentrale kunstnere som Peder Balke, Adelsteen
Normann og Olav Christopher Jenssen er representert. Museets samlinger gjenspeiler utviklingen
av norsk billedkunst og kunsthåndverk fra begynnelsen av 1800-tallet til i dag. Samlingen teller ca.
1.650 verker, fordelt på maleri, skulptur, grafikk, fotografi, video, tekstil og kunsthåndverk. Museet
eier også verker av bl.a. Iver Jåks, David Hockney, Anna-Eva Bergman og Odd Nerdrum. Som et
museum med ansvar for hele den nordlige regionen opprettet Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum i 2010 en
egen avdeling for landsdelsdekkende program, som turnerer utstillinger i de tre nordligste fylkene
pluss Svalbard. I tillegg turnerer museet vandreutstillinger til skolene i landsdelen.

The museum is situated in an historic Customs warfhouse from the 1830s, delightfully located at the
waterfront of the historic Skansen area. Discover Polar History; exiting stories of risky Arctic trapping
and sea mammal hunting, as well as courageous Polar explorers like Fridtjof Nansen and Roald
Amundsen.

The Art Museum of Northern Norway is the youngest art museum in Norway, funded in 1985. The
Museum is situated by Roald Amundsen's Square near the coastal steamer quay in the city centre,
in the oldest street of Tromsø. The Museum shows temporary exhibitions of both historical and
contemporary art. The first floor is dedicated to a permanent exhibition showing works from the
Museum's collections, where key painters like Peder Balke, Adelsteen Normann and Olav Christopher
Jenssen are on display. The permanent collections reflect the development in Norwegian visual art
and applied art from the early 1800s to present day, with attention to art connected to Northern
Norway. The collections consist of approximately 1.650 works, including painting, sculpture, graphics,
photography, video, textiles and applied art. The Museum also owns works by artists such as Iver
Jåks, David Hockney, Anna-Eva Bergman and Odd Nerdrum.

Near Polaria, just south of city centre
This boat, built in 1949, is by far the best preserved vessel that has taken part in seal hunting. The entire interior fittings above and below deck are original and the vessel is seen as extremely authentic,
with the original sailing rig, the small hunting boats, doors and windows and the teak panelling in the
wheelhouse still in place.
M/S "Polstjerna" sailed for 33 hunting seasons and brought home approx. 100,000 seals. The last
year the ship was used for sealing was 1981. Put in a protective glass house in 2003, the boat can now
be admired as a monument to the important tradition of Arctic hunting in the history of Tromsø.
Selfangstskute bygd i 1949, og i særklasse det best bevarte fartøyet som har deltatt i selfangsten.
Hele innredningen over og under dekk er original, og fartøyet fremstår svært autentisk med original
seilrigg og seil samt fangstbåter, dører, vinduer og teakpanelet til originalt styrehus, og en mengde
løsøre. Riksantikvaren har gitt skipet status som verneverdig.
M/S "Polstjerna" har vært brukt i 33 fangstsesonger og ført hjem ca. 100.000 sel fra Vestisen og
Østisen. Skuta har også vært benyttet til en rekke polare ekspedisjonsturer. 1981 var siste året hun
ble brukt til selfangst, og i 2003 kom båten under tak i eget glasshus, hvor den kan beundres som
det monument den er over Tromsøs ishavstradisjoner.

The field of responsibility of the museums covers coastal culture in Finnmark, focusing particularly on
the fishery history, evacuation and reconstruction history, contemporary documentation, and multicultural Finnmark. The management office of the museums is in Honningsvåg.
I våre fem museumsavdelinger kan du oppleve ekte kystkultur, få innblikk i lokalhistorien, bli kjent

Tana Museum/Deanu musea is a Saami cultural heritage museum focusing on the river Saami
culture along Tanaelven. The settlement in Tanadalen is due primarily to the abundance of fish in the
Tana river, and the museum’s main exhibition highlights the unique culture that has subsequently
emerged. The exhibition is therefore based on traditional net fishing in the Tana river system.

RiddoDuottarMuseat is a museum foundation consisting of four institutions in four municipalities in West
Finnmark. These four institutions are: Jáhkovuona mearrasámi musea/Kokelv sjøsamiske museum lies in
Kvalsund municipality and has a collection and exhibition of buildings and objects from the Sea Sami area.
Porsánggu musea/Porsankin museo/Porsanger museum has a collection that focuses on the encounter
between three peoples: Sami, Norwegian and Kven cultures. In Skoganvarre the institution has an exhibition
of objects from the Second World War. Guovdageainnu gilišilju/Kautokeino bygdetun has a considerable
collection of objects, a basic exhibition and an outdoor museum consisting of buildings from the Kautokeino
region. Sámiid Vuorká-Dávvirat/De Samiske Samlinger is the administrative centre for RiddoDuottarMuseat.
This institution has a considerable collection of objects, exhibitions showing objects and Sámi costumes from
all over Sápmi, as well as an outdoor museum. In addition the museum has a large Sami art collection.
RiddoDuottarMuseat er en museumsstiftelse som består av fire enheter i fire kommuner i Vest-Finnmark.
De fire enhetene er; Jáhkovuona mearrasámi musea/Kokelv sjøsamiske museum er lokalisert i Kvalsund
kommune og har en samling av bygninger og gjenstander fra det sjøsamiske området. Porsánggu musea/
Porsankin museo/Porsanger museum har en samling med fokus på tre stammers møte; samisk-, norsk- og
kvensk kultur. Enheten har blant annet en krigshistorisk utstilling i Skoganvarre. Guovdageainnu gilišilju/

Vardø Museum was established in 1884 as a natural history museum, it is the oldest museum in
Finnmark County. Today it is a modern cultural history museum with a number of thematic exhibitions. The Pomor museum documents the history of trade between Russia and northern Norway
for a period of over 300 years. It is located in the centre of Vardø in the former Brodtkorb wharfs.
The Partisan museum in Kiberg tells the story of the partisan movement in Finnmark during World
War II. Partisans were engaged mainly with intelligence work behind the German lines, sending
information to the Soviet Union. Steilneset memorial was opened in June 2011, a part of The National
Tourist routes of Norway. It is a memorial to the 91 persons convicted of sorcery and burnt at the
stake in Finnmark County. The installation consists of an artwork by Louise Bourgeois housed in the
architecture of Peter Zumthor.
Museet i Vardø er det eldste i Finnmark, etablert i 1884 som et naturhistorisk museum. I dag er
museet et moderne kulturhistorisk museum. Pomormuseet viser samhandling mellom Russland og
Nord-Norge i over 300 år og ligger i sentrum av Vardø i det tidligere Brodtkorbbruket . Partisanmuseet viser partisanvirksomhet fra Finnmark under Annen Verdenskrig. Partisanene drev hovedsakelig
med etterretning bak tyske linjer og sendte militære opplysninger til Sovjetunionen. Steilneset minnested ble åpnet i juni 2011 og består av installasjoner oppført av Nasjonal turistveg.

The Borderland museum tells the borderland history of Sør-Varanger, how the community was and
still is, effected of our close relations with Russia and Finland. We focus on Norwegian, Finnish and
Russian immigration, ’the political and cultural colonization of local inhabitants’, the establishment of
the mining company Sydvaranger AS, and WWII. See also the graphic art exhibition by the acknowledged North Norwegian artist Kaare Espolin Johnson (1907 – 1994).
Vår oppgave er å fortelle om grensehistorien i Sør-Varanger, som grensekommune mot Russland
og Finland. Viktige temaer i denne historien er, norsk, finsk og russisk innvandring, etablering av
gruve- bedriften Sydvaranger AS, nasjonale myndigheters holdninger overfor lokalbefolkningen,
og om Sør-Varanger under 2. verdenskrig. Se også utstillingen med grafiske verk av den anerkjente
kunstneren Kaare Espolin Johnson (1907-1994).
