RESPONSORIAL PSALM
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Be merciful, O Lord. Be merciful, O Lord.
Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.
Make our hearts, O Lord, Rich soil for your Word.
Plant new seeds of faith, hope and love.
Make our hearts, O Lord, Rich soil for your Word.
Welcome to the Word of God.
Have mercy on my God in your kindness
In your compassion, blot out my offence.
O wash me more and more from my guilt,
And cleanse me from my sin!
My offences, truly I know them,
And my sin is always before me.
Against you, you alone have I sinned.
What is evil in your sight, I have done.
A pure heart create for me, O God.
Put a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence,
Nor deprive me of your holy spirit.
Give me again the joy of your help,
With a spirit of fervour sustain me.
O Lord, open my lips
And my mouth shall declare your praise.

A RICH HARVEST
The gospel reading begins with some Greeks wanting to
meet Jesus. Why is it significant that they were Greeks?
The Jews were very clear about the distinction between
Jews and non-Jews (Gentiles). Regardless of their
intentions and goodwill, a Gentile was simply not a Jew.
Greeks, who worshipped an entire pantheon of gods,
were regarded as almost as far from Jewish belief in one
God as was possible. Yet Jesus made clear that his
message was for everyone: Jew and Gentile alike. His
death and resurrection would bring a ‘rich harvest’ of
belief among Gentiles as well as Jews. —Greg Sunter
OUR LENTEN THEME
This Lent, our theme is Mountain, Metaphor and Mystery.
The mountain itself is a metaphor for the spiritual
journey. In the Scriptures we read of people climbing
high mountains to encounter God. During this season,
our spiritual journey is one of deeply encountering the
Mystery of God in the life, death and resurrection of
Jesus Christ.
THE BLUE LIGHT
The icon of the Transfiguration (by
Theophanes the Greek, 1403) is our
focus for the Lent/Easter season. In this
Sunday’s gospel there are hints of
Jesus’ transfiguration and his
resurrection. The gospel speaks of
Jesus being raised and glorified. In our
icon, the divine light shining from the
glorified Christ is blue. And this blue
light shines gently onto the frightened disciples who are
overcome with awe. In iconography, blue is the celestial
colour. It was used to portray divine light and lovingkindness.
… AND THE CAVES
In the gospel today we hear of the
wheat grain falling into the earth and
dying. The icon has caves in the side of
the mountain representing Elijah’s cave
and burial place of Jesus. There is new
life springing up from the caves – a living sign of hope in
the resurrection.
HOLY WEEK BEGINS NEXT WEEKEND
Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, the
beginning of Holy Week. Please note
that, at St Ambrose’s, the ceremony will
begin at 10.00am with the Blessing of
Palms in the Olive Garden in front of St
Ambrose’s church. We will gather
there to pray with the other Brunswick

then we will return to the church for our Palm Sunday
Mass at 10.30.

PAGINA IN ITALIANO
