All who see me deride me. They curl their lips, they toss their heads. ‘He trusted in the Lord, let him save him; let him release him if this is his friend.’ Many dogs have surrounded me, a band of the wicked beset me. They tear holes in my hands and my feet. I can count every one of my bones. They divide my clothing among them. They cast lots for my robe. O Lord, do not leave me alone, my strength, make haste to help me! I will tell of your name to my brethren and praise you where they are assembled. ‘You who fear the Lord give him praise; all sons of Jacob, give him glory. Revere him, Israel’s sons.’ 29 MARCH 2015 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! Cantor: Christ became obedient for us even to death dying on the cross. Therefore God raised him on high and gave him a name above all other names. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II RECENTLY DECEASED: Luigi D’Eboli of Lord Street, Ross Barfoot of Barkly Street, Rosa Ferraro of Brunswick Road ANNIVERSARIES: Salvatore Molica, Salvatore Scarnato, Mauro Amato, Rosa Covalea, Tony Greco JESUS – VULNERABLE AND SUFFERING Mark’s Gospel was being written around the year 70 CE. It was a time of great turbulence and the small Christian community in Rome was under threat. Since the year 64 CE the emperor Nero had begun a wave of persecution of Christians, and in the year 70 Roman armies finally captured and destroyed Jerusalem. It was a time when the faith of believers was being tested. They might well feel that God had abandoned them. Mark depicts a Jesus who also experiences suffering, anguish, the sense of abandonment by God and even death. Jesus, in Mark's gospel, is no super-hero, but a vulnerable human being, victim to the power of the Empire, the dismay of human friends who abandon him in his hour of need, and even the apparent silence of God. Jesus knows human suffering. This is a Jesus whom Mark’s community can identify with. The disciples also are presented as weak and frightened followers of Jesus. Again, Mark’s community could identify with these failing men and women. —Mary Coloe PETER, JAMES AND JOHN In the Icon of the Transfiguration which is featured on our altar for the Lent/Easter season, we see Jesus taking Peter, James and John up a high mountain where he is transfigured before them. The icon reveals that the experience of Jesus’ divinity was too overwhelming for them. These are the same three disciples he takes with him into Gethsemane. But it also seems that the experience of the intensity of Jesus’ humanity is too much for them. They fall asleep and fail to give Jesus support during his time of deep human suffering. HOLY WEEK BEGINS THIS WEEK Today, with Palm Sunday, we enter this most sacred week – a week that leads us into the Easter Triduum.
