Bases – produce negative hydroxide ions (OH-) ions when dissolved in water. pH
of >7 - 14. Slippery and bitter.
Acids – produce positive hydrogen ions (H+) ions when dissolved in water. pH of 0
to <7. Corrosive and sour.
Indicator – a substance that changes color when acids and bases are added to it.
Litmus paper, used to determine pH and is known as an indicator – when placed
in an acids turn red, when placed in a base turn blue.
Neutralize – to bring a solution to neutral or a pH of 7. A pH of 7 means that the
solution is neutral, meaning the hydrogen and hydroxide ions are equal.
pH – “potential of Hydrogen” is used to measure the level of acidity or base.
