Four great sporting moments The FIFA World Cup in 1986 is still famous for the match between Argentina and England. These two countries had been rivals since at least 1966, when England had won with a goal that might have been given from the offside, or against the rules. Then, in 1982, the two countries had got into a war in the Falkland Islands, which England had also won. Therefore, when the teams met in Mexico City in 1986, the tension was high. During the game, Argentinean captain Diego Maradona scored two famous goals. One of the goals was controversial, because he gave it with his hand, which is not permitted in football, but which the referees did not notice. Maradona, however, claimed it was the “Hand of God” that helped him. The other goal was later called the “Goal of the Century”, because he managed it by passing four English players over 50 metres in just 10 seconds. Argentina beat England and won the Cup that year. 1. What significant event took place in 1986 that is still well-known in the history of football? 2.
