Centennial Honors College Western Illinois University Undergraduate Research Day 2014 Poster Presentation Argentina: Government and cultural effects on press freedom Sean Ellis Faculty Mentor: Yong Tang Journalism The purpose of this study is to use the press freedom rankings from Reporters without Borders, Freedom House, IREX, and Committee to protect Journalists to compare and contrast how Argentina and the United States have protected/undermined press freedoms in the time since the 911 attack. While the 911 attack was an attack on the U.S. it is a key event in press freedom around the world. The study examines the similarities in the forms of government in the U.S. and Argentina, how those governments act or fail in the interest of protecting journalists and a free and open press. During the course of the study it became clear that there were similarities as well as differences in how the governments of the U.S. and Argentina acted to protect journalists and freedom of the press.
