Reasons for the survival of Granada in the reconquest. 1. After the fall of Cordoba, the ruler of Granada signed a special agreement with Ferdinand III,the emperor of the kingdom of Castilla in the year 1243, this consisted of Granada becoming part of the kingdom of Castilla but also remaining as an independent state, part of the agreement was that Granada could not attacked them. They paid the tributes and became the servant of the king. 2. The geography of Granada was one of the reasons why they maintained their independence, their mountains created a natural barrier for invading armies and provided protection, it is very similar to the beginning of the reconquista in Asturias. 3. The Muslim in Granada had more economical advantages than Castile. Trade between Granada and the Maghreb was strong, allowing Granada's rulers to pay Castile in gold when needed. 4. In Castile they had a problem in the years 1350-69, it was a dynasty struggle between two brothers (Pedro/Peter the Cruel and Henry/Enrique of Trastámara) for the throne and distracted the Christians from its early goal. 5. After the revolt of 1264, thousands of Muslims fled to Granada, including the thousands who had survived the battle of Navas de Tolosa in 1212. All these newcomers to the kingdom of Granada made a formidable force against Castile. Any Christian invasion against them would be very catastrophic. 6. Between 1351 and 1369 the Muslims took advantage of the civil war that was taking place in Castile between the pretenders Pedro I and Enrique II. This conflict, at the same time that it left the Kingdom of Castilla exhausted, granted the kingdom of Granada a few years of peace in which they could create strategies without the Christians interfering. 7. There was a great rivalry between Castile and Aragon, as the two were moving towards the south, towards Muslim lands. This rivalry disappeared after an agreement , signed in 1244, limited Aragon’s expansion into al-Andalus. parias= taxes they paid.
