The media that artists use to mold sculptures include clay, wax, pulp, and plaster. When a soft or malleable material (such as clay) is constructed (sometimes on a skeleton) and shaped to create a form, a model sculpture is created. Model sculpture can also be the first step in casting or carving sculptures. MEDIUMS & TECHNIQUES C A S T I N G Casting is an additive process. The process involved in producing bronze sculptures. Bronze is an alloy consisting of copper commonly with about 12 – 12.5 % tin and often with the addition of other metals like aluminum, manganese, nickel, or zinc. Casting sculpture involves modeling the sculpture, then making a mold and casting it in metal or other media. MEDIUMS & TECHNIQUES C A R V I N G Carving is a subtractive sculpture. Generally, materials such as wood blocks, stones, and other hard materials are used. Engraving involves cutting or cutting off a shape from a large amount of stone, wood, or other hard materials. MEDIUMS & TECHNIQUES A S S E M B L Y Assembly is an additive sculpture. Sculptors gather and add different materials to create assembled art sculptures. Assembled sculptures will pull bits and pieces— some are recycled—from almost anywhere into textures that satisfy the artist. MEDIUMS & TECHNIQUES KINDS OF SCULPTURE 1. ROUND SCULPTURE Also called a free-standing sculpture, a round sculpture or sculpture in the round stands on its own and is capable of being viewed at all sides (front, rear, left, and right sides). These works do not have a background or any kind of support except the base. 2. RELIEF SCULPTURE It does not stand on its own because it is attached. Relief sculpture is any work which projects from but which belongs to the wall, or other type of background surface, on which it is carved.
