BIDVEST PORT OPERATIONS REPORT ON DEMOLITION OF TOWER SECTION OF QUAYSIDE WAREHOUSING AT MAYDON ROAD, MAYDON WHARF Prepared by S. Osborn Pr Eng SKP Engineers cc 21 September 2007 File No: 1381/17 Bidvest Port Operations – Report on Demolition to Upper Section of Quince Warehouse 1. SKP Engineers cc TERMS OF REFERENCE SKP Engineers cc were requested by Bidvest Port Operations (BPO) Operations Manager (Mr N. Watson) to carry out an inspection of portion of Quayside Warehousing at Maydon Road, Maydon Wharf. The old warehouse has recently been acquired by BPO, and is currently undergoing partial demolition and remedial work. During demolition works it was noticed that the part of the structure to be demolished could be supporting the roof, and hence an inspection was required to confirm that the structural integrity of the building would not be compromised during this work. 2. SITE INSPECTION A site inspection was undertaken on 21 September 2007. The following observations were made: • • • • • The warehouse roof structure is fabricated from arched concrete members at 4,5m centres along the warehouse, fixed at the sides and butting at the top. These members support steel purlins and roof sheet. There is a reinforced concrete mezzanine floor approximately 4.5m high across the warehouse which is currently being demolished. There is an open bay 4.5m wide near the western side of the building, where there is a structural steel frame (columns & beams) with columns supported on the concrete mezzanine floor, extending approximately 7m above the arched roof. This is referred to as the “tower” section. There is evidence that there previously was mechanical equipment fixed at the roof level of this tower, with the loads being transmitted down the structural steelwork and into the concrete columns supporting the mezzanine floor. The tower section and the arched roof structure are independent and there are no structural interconnections. Page 2 of 3 Bidvest Port Operations – Report on Demolition to Upper Section of Quince Warehouse 3. SKP Engineers cc CONCLUSIONS Since there are no connections between the tower structure and the arched roof, the tower structure and its supporting mezzanine floor may be demolished, without affecting the structural integrity of the warehouse. After removal of the tower section, it will be necessary to provide additional galvanised steel purlins and aluminium roof sheeting to reinstate the weather proofing of the structure. This will include the installation of the upper ventilation section, to a similar form as the existing roof. A quotation has been requested from Avellini Bros for this work, which will be forwarded on receipt. Report prepared by: S. OSBORN _________________ S. Osborn Pr Eng SKP ENGINEERS Page 3 of 3
