PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
* inhibits production of prostaglandins
*reduce inflammation and fever
*decrease platelet aggregation
Therapeutic Use
*to reduce mild pain or fever
*to reduce the risk of recurrent transient
ischemic attacks
Complications
confusion, depression, tinnitus, diarrhea, GI bleeding,
hepatoxicity
Contraindications/Precautions
hypersensitivity to aspirin or other salicylates bleeding
disorders or thrombocytopenia
Medication Administration
PO: 81-1000g every 4-6 hours
max: 4g/day
Nursing Interventions
*Monitor skin and gums for
bleeding
*Assess pain and fever
*Monitor s/s for tinnitus
Interactions
May increase the risk of bleeding with warfarin, heparin,
heparin-like agents, thrombolytic agents, or tirofiban
