PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
Therapeutic Use
Binds to opiate receptors in the central nervous system and
alters the response of painful stimuli while producing
generalized central nervous system depression.
Used to treat moderate to severe pain that is not
well managed with other pain medications.
Complications
Medication Administration
Severe constipation. Diarrhea. Confusion. Fever. Weak pulse. Shallow
breathing. Severe stomach pain. Painful or difficulty with urination.
Tachycardia or feeling like your heart is pounding. Blurred vision. Dry
mouth.
Contraindications/Precautions
Precaution use with peptic ulcer clients
