The student bluffers will either help or trick you by providing answer and proofs to the statements. The group has to decide whether their chosen bluffer's answer is a fact or a bluff. If answered correctly, the group get the points for that question otherwise the points will be split between the opponent groups. Are you ready? (using laptop) The statements are: 1. Oranges are always yellow or orange. 2. The egg came first than the chicken. 3. The chances of coins landing on heads are the “yes ma’am” same chances of landing on tails. It‘s fifty-fifty. 4. A person‘s whose mother tongue is very different from English will never lose his accent when moving to United States. 1. Oranges are always yellow or orange. Is it fact or bluff? Bluff- in many countries oranges are green, even when ripe and are sold that way in shops. Some oranges are a cross between tangerines and the Pomelo or “Chinese grapefruit” (which is light green or yellow), and were first grown in southeast Asia. 2. The egg came first than the chicken. Is it fact or bluff? FACT- As the geneticist J.B.S Haldane remarked. “The most frequently ask question is “which came first, the chicken or the egg? The fact that still asked proves either that many people have never been taught the process of evolution or that they don’t believe it. “With that in mind, the answer becomes obvious. Bird evolved from reptiles, so the first bird must have come out of an egg laid by reptile. 3. The chances of coins landing on heads are the same chances of landing on tails. It‘s fifty-fifty. Is it fact or bluff? BLUFF- It isn’t fifty. If the coin is heads up to begin with, it’s more likely to land on heads, student’s at Stanford university recorded thousands of coin tosses with high speed cameras and discovered the chances are approximately fifty one to forty nine. 4. An opinion is an expression of a person's feelings that cannot be proven” Very good, Kate. You may now take your seat. So when we say fact it is a statement that is true, that can be proven through observation, experimentation, and research. For example: There are 12 months in a year. It’s a fact, because it’s true that we have 12 months in one year, from month of January until December. Who can give an example of fact statements? Mariel? Very good Mariel! Its fact because Thomas Jefferson is the third president in the US. Okay so let’s proceed to opinion. When we say opinion Remember what Kate said that it is a statement of one’s belief or point of view. Simply an opinion is an expression of a person's feelings that cannot be proven. It’s either correct for you but incorrect for others just because it’s your own opinion. There are 2 kinds of opinions: (1)Judgement – Is an opinion, decision or a sentence. Example: A blonde woman automatically being treated as “The third president of the United States was Thomas Jefferson.” dumb. An example of judgment is someone being sentenced to two months in prison for a crime committed. (2)Prediction. Prediction is simply predicting what will happen tomorrow or the next day but it is consider as an opinion because we really don’t know what will exactly happen tomorrow or the next day. It’s something out our control. For example: Monday is the best day of the week. This is an opinion because not all people likes Monday. May I ask Gift can you give me an example of “yellow is the most beautiful color” opinion statement? Very Good! That’s will be an opinion because not all people like yellow. And also for us to easily recognized and differentiate one from the other, we need to familiarizeu3 s ourselves with word identifiers or introductory phrases especially in an opinionated statement, e.g. “I believe. I think, I feel, my favorite, I am confident, based on what I know.” On the other hand, Facts provide crucial support for the assertion of an argument. C.
