It wasn’t already time to wake up, was it? He could tell it was already light outside. Khalil groaned and looked at the window. Suddenly, he sat up. It was snowy outside! Maybe it was a snow day! Grabbing his robe, Khalil ran down the stairs. “Morning, Khalil,” his mom said. “It’s a snow day today. No school!” Khalil punched the sky in triumph. Now that he was awake, he wanted to go outside and play. After getting dressed and eating a quick breakfast, Khalil ran outside. He stuck his tongue out and caught a snowflake. That’s funny, he thought, the snow tasted sweet! He took a small scoop of clean, cold, fluffy snow and took a taste. It was sweet! It tasted like ice cream! Khalil took another bite and another one. This was delicious! He was playing in a world full of ice cream. Khalil ran around, happily scooping and eating the snowy ice cream. He began to feel hot and tired. Suddenly, he looked around and realized that the snow was melting. Oh no!, Khalil thought. The ice cream is getting all gross and muddy. His day of fun couldn’t be over already, could it? Quickly, Khalil ran home to get his mother’s biggest plastic bowl. He searched for the cleanest patches of snow and scooped as much of the snowy ice cream in the bowl. Finally, when he filled the bowl to the top, he ran back home and stuck his treat in the freezer. Khalil went back outside, but the snow was now just a muddy, sticky mess. “Mom!” he called out. “It was ice cream! The snow was actually ice cream!” Khalil’s mom just laughed. “Wouldn’t that be cool?” she said. “No, Mom,” Khalil protested. “It really was ice cream.” He ran to get a spoon, opening the freezer and getting a small scoop of the snowy ice cream he collected. “Taste it!” he said. His mom smiled and took a taste. “Tastes like snow to me!” she said. Khalil took a taste. It only tasted like plain snow. Khalil was disappointed, but at least he had one magical day in the snow. © Speechy Musings FIND THE STORY PARTS: Characters q Feelings q Failed Action q Setting q Plan q Solution q Problem q Action q Dialogue ANSWER: 1) Why was Khalil excited after waking up? 2) What did the snow taste like? 3) What did Khalil do when the snow started to melt?
