countries in Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos,
Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and
Vietnam. The ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok,
Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok
Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia,
Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam
joined ASEAN on 7 January 1984, followed by Viet Nam on 28 July
1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30
April 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of

ASEAN integration. It is the only way to fight the
foreseen crumbling of the world's economy. The
unity of countries to strengthen the economy for
the future is one of the main goals of ASEAN

Yes it is important because we need to be globally
competitive like the others to secure our
progressive state or even elevate the country's
economic progress more. It is also a motivation
for 21st Century people to push harder for the
better and provide more breakthroughs for the

important because of the ongoing economic
crisis experienced in most of the countries

IV. Evaluation
Instructions: Read the informational text concerning ASEAN. Thereafter, answer the questions that
follow.
The goal of ASEAN, then, is to create, not to destroy. This, the Foreign Minister of Thailand, Thanat
Khoman stressed when it was his turn to speak. At a time when the Vietnam conflict was raging and American
forces seemed forever entrenched in _ Indochina, he had foreseen their eventual withdrawal from the area
and had accordingly applied himself to adjusting Thailand's foreign policy to a reality that would anly become
apparent more than half a decade later, He must have had that in mind when, on that occasion, he said that
the countries of Southeast Asia had no choice but to adjust to the exigencies of the time, to move toward
closer cooperation and even integration, Elaborating on ASEAN objectives, he spoke of building a new society
that will be responsive to the needs of our time and efficiently equipped to bring about, for the enjoyment
and the material as well as spiritual advancement of our peoples, conditions of stability and progress.
Particularly what millions of men and women in our part of the world want is to erase the old and obsolete
concept of domination and subjection of the past and replace it with the new spirit of give and take, of
equality and partnership. More than anything else, they want to be master of their own house and to enjoy
the inherent right to decide their own destiny...
1. According to the reading text, what is the goal of ASEAN?
2. Why is integration important?
3. Who would benefit from this integration?

Lesson Proper
 Discuss the author and text.
Students will participate in the discussion.
About the author: Victor Hugo is, without doubt, the most
famous figure ever to have lived in the Channel Islands. He is famous
worldwide as both a literary and political celebrity and he has
succeeded in the difficult task of being both intellectually respectable
and at the same time immensely popular, especially through two of
his major works, Notre Dame de Paris and Les Misérables, which was
completed in Guernsey.
About the text: “Les Misérables employs Hugo’s style of
imaginative realism and is set in an artificially created human hell that
emphasizes the three major predicaments of the nineteenth century.
Each of the three major characters in the novel symbolizes one of
these predicaments: Jean Valjean represents the degradation of man
in the proletariat, Fantine represents the subjection of women
through hunger, and Cosette represents the atrophy of the child by
darkness. In part, the novel’s fame has endured because Hugo
successfully created characters that serve as symbols of larger
problems without being flat devices.
