PROBLEM STATEMENT TO GIVE TO YOUR TURBINE DEVELOPMENT DIVISION
Overall design (a high-level systems and
design objectives question) [20 marks
total]
Neutral problem statement: Produce a new more sufficient gearbox
for the wind turbine so the gearbox will help the turbine to speed up
the rotation of the turbine blades. To Improve the efficiency of the
gearbox, we should use more long and wide blades, at a low wind
speed, whereas in a high wind speed the blades should be long and
thin and the blade pitch should be large as well.

REQUIRMENTS
A good quality, modern
wind turbine will
generally last for 20
years, although this can
be extended to 25
years or longer
depending on
environmental factors
and the correct
maintenance
procedures being
followed.
Building a wind turbine
must take about 2
months to build it

The average cost of the
wind turbine depends
on the turbine size,
project size and
location.
High probability that
wind turbine can be

regulations
It has no air pollutants,
it has one of the lowest
CO2 emissions, it emits
no greenhouse gases,
no water used.
Turbines will have to
be almost fully
recyclable.
the wind turbine blade
geometry is
optimized first to
maximize the
aerodynamic
performance of the
turbine.
D
Wind turbine blades
are shaped so that the
air molecules moving
around the blade travel
faster on the
downwind side of the
blade than those
moving across the
upwind side of the
blade.
Wind turbine blades
generate lift with their
curved shape. The side
with the most curve
generates low air
pressure, while at the
same time highpressure air beneath
forces on the other
side of the bladeshaped aerofoil.

The maintenance of
wind turbines takes
place at predetermined
intervals, usually once
or twice a year
whereby all important
mechanical and
electrical assemblies
are checked. In
addition, minor repairs
can be performed and
consumables such as
greases, oils and filters
can be exchanged.

There are two major
forces acting on
wind turbine blades as
they rotate.
The energy in the wind
turns two or three
propeller-like blades
around a rotor. The
rotor is connected to
the main shaft, which
spins a generator to
create electricity.
