Vernier Caliper
A vernier caliper, instrument for making very accurate linear measurements, was
introduced in 1631 by Pierre Vernier of France. It is made up of a main scale and a
sliding vernier scale. The vernier scale is divided into 20 equal divisions and thus the
least count of the instrument is 0.05 mm.

Micrometer
A micrometer is a precision measuring instrument. Each revolution of the ratchet moves
the spindle face 0.5 mm towards the anvil face. The object to be measured is placed
between the anvil face and the spindle face.
