A multi-movement work for orchestra, the symphony is derived
from the Italian word sinfonia which means “a harmonious sounding
together”. It is a classical music for the whole orchestra, generally in four
movements at least one of which usually employs sonata form (also
called first-movement form)
4 MOVEMENTS OF THE SYMPHONY:
1st Movement: Fast: Sonata-allegro form ( the most important principle of musical form)
2nd Movement: Slow: Gentle, lyrical-typical ABA form or theme and variation
3rd Movement: Medium/Fast: Uses a dance form, Minuet (moderate tempo) or scherzo
(commonly in quick triple time)
4th Movement: Fast: Typically Rondo or Sonata form
