How were the Filipinos treated under the Spanish Bureaucracy The Spaniards have abused the Filipinos, but they treated them more lenient compared to the Latin America. What went on was the rewriting of our traditions branding them as “Evil works”. As such, they have imposed to us what they think is “right” and “true”. These include the abuse of bureaucrats from labor to taxation, education, and even sexual abuse to the Filipino women. Referred to as Polo y Servicio, the Labor code was nonexistent since the Spaniards forced Filipinos to work regardless of age. Bureaucrats have also imposed impossible taxes to the Filipinos as tribute and “Bandala”. Most crucial to this day was the sexual abuse of Spaniards and Spanish Bureaucrats to the Filipino women which resulted to numerous Mestizos. The Spanish colonialism under the influence of he bureaucrats have also limited the degree of education system in our country by limiting only to a number of “qualified” individuals to not start a revolt from educated Filipinos What is the Secularization movement? What changes did it bring to society? The secularization movement was an act to refine the rights of the native clergymen, the Filipino clergy. Seculars are the clergy who do not affiliate themselves to any order which mostly consists of the natives. This secularization will “upgrade” the statuses of the Filipino clergy to head their own parishes themselves. Under this movement, the Filipinos met opposition from the friars since the change will bring a dwindle to the friar’s authority and influence over the congregation. This has erupted racist remarks belittling the Filipino clergymen of their capabilities and eligibility to priesthood. With this, the society has met with a disturbance since there are factions who wanted to have their independence but couldn’t resist the friars. This has resulted to the execution of the well known GOMBURZA, from this point on, the revolution escalated and led to what we have today as well as the establishment of the parish of the poor, the Iglesia Filipina Independiente.
