The year is 1885, and you are a reporter for the
Manitoba Free Press Newspaper. You have been
asked to write an obituary for Louis Riel.
Your obituary should include:
 A photo of Louis Riel
 An announcement of his death
 Biographical information
 Survivor information
 Personal opinion
An obituary is written in
third person narrative and is usually not more than
three quarters of a page in length.

There are five parts to an obituary:
Part 1
Be sure to include a photo of Louis Riel at the top of
your obituary.
Part 2
In one or two sentences make an official
announcement about Louis Riel's death. Include his
name, how, when, and where he died.
Part 3
Write a few sentences about his biographical
information. Explain where and when he was born,
facts about his professional and personal life, as
well as a list of his major accomplishments.
Part 4
Explain who Louis Riel is survived by. Only include his
immediate family members.
Part 5
In the last few paragraphs of your obituary,
discuss your views on whether Riel was a hero or a
villain. Remember to stay in the third person
narrative and to avoid the use of “I statements".
Your opinion must provide evidence from your
research as support for your opinion.
