1. The Cerebrum - The biggest part of the brain that controls voluntary muscles; memory, (short & long term). 2. The Cerebellum - Important in movement control (motor skills). It controls balance, movement, and coordination (how your muscles work together); known as the little brain. 3. Pituitary Gland - Size of a pea, its job is to produce and release hormones into your body. This gland is a big player in puberty. When boys and girl’s bodies go through major changes as they slowly become men and women. 4. 5. 6. 7. Pons - Part of the Brain Stem; Function: helps regulate movement. Midbrain - Part of the Brain Stem; Function breathing, sleep-wake cycle. Pineal Gland - Posterior to the thalamus. It produces a hormone called melatonin. Hypothalamus - Brain’s inner thermostat; plays role in regulating hormones. If your body is too hot, the hypothalamus tells it to sweat. If you’re too cold, it gets you to shiver. 8. Thalamus - The “Belmopan” of the brain; it acts as a relay station for sensory and motor signals and regulating sleep. 9. Limbic System - Hippocampus, Amygdala, Hypothalamus. 10. Amygdala - Responsible for emotions; associated with emotions, impulses, aggression, and instinctive behavior. 11. Brain Stem - Includes the Medulla Oblongata, Pons & Midbrain. 12. The Occipital Lobe - Lobe responsible for visual processing. 13. Corpus Callosum - A band of axon fibres that connect the two hemispheres and allow them to communicate. 14. The Temporal Lobe - Lobe containing the primary auditory cortex, important for our ability to hear and process speech and language. 15. The Frontal Lobe - The largest lobe containing the primary motor cortex. This region has a “map” of the body that sends out signals to control the use and movement of your limbs and muscles. 16. Hippocampus - Seahorse shape; responsible for memories. 17. Gyri - Folds or Bumps on the surface of the brain. 18. Sulci - Grooves on the surface of the brain. 19. Medulla Oblongata - Part of the Brain Stem; Function: heart rate, breathing, blood pressure. 20. Neurons - The fundamental units of the brain and nervous system. 21. Parietal Lobe - Lobe containing the somatosensory cortex; responsible for processing your sense of touch.
