Block the action of acetylcholine in the CNS
to help normalize the acetylcholine-dopamine
imbalance

Treatment of parkinsonism
Relief of extrapyramidal symptoms
Complications
disorientation, confusion, agitation, nausea, vomiting, dry
mouth, urinary retention, blurred vision, decreased
sweating, sedation, dizziness, insomnia, flushing
Medication Administration
Oral, IV
Contraindications/Precautions
known allergy, narrow angle glaucoma, prostatic
hypertrophy, CV instability, hepatic dysfunction, pregnancy
and lactation, older children, older adults, mental
disorders, enlarged prostate
Interactions
tricyclic antidepressants, Phenothiazines (antipsychotics),
alcohol, MAO inhibitors, procainamide, quinidine, CNS
depressants
Nursing Interventions
- Assess therapeutic
effectiveness,
- Monitor for and report muscle
weakness or inability to move
certain muscles
- Supervise ambulation and use
bedside rails as necessary
