PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins that may
perform as mediators of pain and fever,
predominently in CNS. Has significant
inflammatory effects or GI toxicity
Therapeutic Use
Mild pain to moderate pain
Moderate to severe pain with opiod
analgesics
Fever
Complications
CNS: drowsiness, confusion, delirium, excitation, headache (with chronic use),
nervousness, numbness
EENT: nasal congestion, tinnitus Resp: respiratory depression
CV: tachycardia
GI: constipation, dry mouth, dysphagia
Derm: dermatitis, pruritis
MS: leg pain, muscle weakness
Misc: fever, physical dependence, tolerance
Medication Administration
Oral Tablet 325-650 mg daily
ONSET PEAK
15-30min 1-2 hrs
Rectal
IV
Contraindications/Precautions
If there is alcoholic consumption of 3 or more drinkd daily
Products containing alcohol, aspartame, saccharin, sugar
History of Liver/Hepatic disease
Interactions
Additive CNS depression with other CNS depressants, including
alcohol, antihistamines, antidepressants, and opioid analgesics.
May increase the metabolism and decrease the effectiveness of other
drugs including amiodarone, benzodiazepines, calcium channel
blockers, citalopram
MAO inhibitors, felbamate, primidone
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
Relief of mild to moderate pain w/o noticeable aleteration
in LOC
Reduction of fever

Assess type, location and
intensity prior to and 30-60 mins
following adminstration
Assess BP afterwards
Assess for rash regularly during
therapy
Client Education
Advice patient to take
medication precisely as directed
and not to take more than the
approved amount
Advice to avoid alcohol. advise
patient to discontinue
acetaminophen if rash occurs/ if
pain persists after 7 days of use
