students translate foreign

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
•GTM is derived from classical
method of teaching(Greek and
Latin).Pioneers of GTM are KARL
PLOTZ, AND H.S.OLLENDERF.It was
dominTed in Europe in 1840- It is
used in subcontinent to teach
english as a foreign language.
Objectives
• The main objective of the GTM IS TO help the
students to learn the foreign language through
extensive analysis of grammar of L2 BY translating
in Native language.
Principal Of GTM
• It focus on the Rules of grammar
• Main focus is on reading and writing
• Native language is the medium of instruction.
• Translation interprets words of foreign language in
best manner.
• Accuracy is emphasized
• Sentence is the basic unit
• More interaction is from teacher side in the
classroom to the students
Merits of GTM
• Teachers labour and time saver
• Phrases of taregt language are quickly explained
• Stress on acquring correct grammar.
• Can enrich learner's L1 AS WELL.
• It is better for large class
• Increase vocabulary
• Civilization awareness through other language
Demerits Of GTM
• It is un-natural method because it ignores the natural
order of language skills
• Communication skills are neglected
• Exact translation in target language is not possible
• This method is not suitable for left brained (critical
minded) students
• Worst effect on students motivation
• It is form focused method
• Passive rule of learners
• Less focus on pronunciation
