The following are six (6) basic Filipino Values. Identify the STRENGTHS and WEAKNESSES of each value. 1. PAKIKISAMA Pakikisama is a Filipino value that is somehow related to pakikipagkapwa and is a great way to have better and stronger social skills. With these, we can easily connect to other people by showing them that we understand, and we are open to have a healthy relationship with them. This also shows how we are flexible in terms of socializing. On the other hand, it can be seen in a bad way if people with this principle are abused by other people to the point that they make some choices just because of this. 2. HIYA Hiya, which is the feeling of shyness or embarrassment is a Filipino value that shows their respect for other people’s life. With these, Filipinos can maintain their respect for each other. In contrast, if this moral is too much with one person, it may lead them to lose their self-confidence and self-esteem. 3. AMOR PROPIO Amor Propio or “pride” is a Filipino value that may be translated to selfrespect. It is a good thing in terms of Filipinos knowing their self-worth and being ready to fight for it. On the other hand, some used it to protect their honor or dignity even if they are the who’s at fault for them to avoid such criticisms by others and for them to not be humiliated or belittled. 4, UTANG NA LOOB Utang na loob is a common Filipino aspect that may be defined as a debt of gratitude to one person who helped them in some way. On the positive side, it can be a good way of showing gratitude to people. On the other hand, this principle is abused by others when it is used to repay them even when doing bad things. 5. FILIPINO HOSPITALITY This is well known Filipino aspect. I remember watching some videos of other nationalities in which they were asked about what their perceptions of Filipinos are and being hospitable is the usual answer. I think this moral is a given principle on us because we are known for being welcoming and accommodating. With this aspect, we have the ability to be courteous to everyone. On the other hand, this trait may lead to us being mistreated or abused. 6. RESPECT FOR ELDERS Saying “po” and “opo” when talking to the elders is one of the Filipino traits that shows our respect for elders. It is a great moral and is very important because it shows how a Filipino family is. I think that this trait has no weakness because respect will never be a bad thing. It only shows how we Filipinos have the capability to have a harmonious relationship with everyone.
