THE FUNCTIONS OF THE APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES
The applied social sciences prepare us for the realities and challenges of life. They help us
understanding and develop ourselves and our potentials. Applied social sciences such as
counselling, social works and communication perform these particular functions; selfdevelopment, persuasion, the use of arts and communications, access to and discernment
of news and information, organizing for advocacy and mobilization, and education and
socialization.
Self-development
Self-development is a continuous process involving actions taken to improve ourselves
and maximize our potentials. The basic institution that helps us attain self-development
is the family. Early in life, the family reaches us good manners and right conducts. Our
family prepares us to face challenges, confront problems, and get back up when we fall,
hence the Filipino, adage ‘’Matutong tumayong mag-isa kapag nadapa’’ in particular, our
parents are our first teacher and counsellors. They are always available whenever we need
them.
Upon reaching the appropriate age, are sent to school which exposes us to new knowledge
and experiences. We learn to relate to our classmates who come from different socioeconomic strata.
Our teachers impart the value of respect to our elders and people in authority. We are
exposed to the affairs of our country, people, and our government through our history and
political science subjects. By giving us access to print and electronic media, school helps
us become critical of the events and changes in our surroundings. Our perspective in life
is eventually broadened. We start to dream is made clearer when we attend career
orientation programs conducted by counsellors.
When pursuing self-development in our careers, our professional expertise must be
complemented by knowledge from other fields. A students of medicine, for example, must
not limit his or her self- development in gaining more knowledge in medical courses or
pursuing a residency program to specialize in particular medical field. The student is also
expected to attend other training programs that will acquaint him or her with the social
needs of people and communities. Doing this while engaging in medical practice can help
the doctor eventually reach self-fulfillment and attain his or her goals in life.
Persuasion
We use the tools of communication not only to inform, argue, and entertain, but also
to persuade. Persuasion is the act of convincing others to agree with what we are saying.
It is our ability to command obedience or influence others to do what we want them to do.
One must have good communication skills to be able to persuade. If a child who wants
a new pair of shoes is able to communicate this want to his or her parents effectively, he
or she will get it. A Candidate running for public office always aims to persuade people to
vote for him or her. The president also aims to persuade the members of congress to
support his or her policy agenda. The supreme court persuades the public that it is making
the correct decision by issuing well-studied and well-crafted decisions.
In movies, good actors and actresses make us believe that they have indeed gone
through the experiences and felt the emotions of the characters they portray. In
advertising and in public relations, one must have persuasive skills to sell a product and
project a good image for the company.
The use of arts and entertainment
The applied social sciences, especially counselling, social works, and communication,
integrate arts and entertainment in their therapy services. Those who go through
counselling are often provided art and music therapy services. They engage in acting,
dance, photography, and creative writing. Art therapy and music therapy recommended
by clinical psychologist and psychiatrists as stress management tools. Debriefing sessions
for disaster victim also focus on art and music therapy, and these help the victim start
anew with their lives.
Entertainment is not only a component of therapy, but it is also a part of our daily lives.
Some people find enjoyment in watching television programs such as variety shows, game
shows, teleseryes, and talk shows, while others prefer to watch movies. These are
considered means to ‘’escape’’ from the hardships of life.
