PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
inhibits the transport of calcium into
myocardial and vascular smooth muscle
cells which inhibits contraction of the
smooth muscle
Complications
Side Effects include: flushed
skin, dizziness, headache,
nausea, peripheral edema,
constipation, fatigue, sexual
dysfunction
Therapeutic Use
systemic vasodilation resulting in decreased blood
pressure and coronary vasodilation to decrease
frequency and severity of attacks of angina
Medication Administration
Orally
Contraindications/Precautions
Contraindicated in hypersensitivity,
systolic BP<90
Use cautiously in patients with sever
hepatic impairment, aortic stenosis, and
a history of HF
Nursing Interventions
Monitor BP for therapeutic effectiveness
Monitor BP with postural changes
Monitor heart rate and for dose-related palpitations
Interactions
Ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, additional hypotension if
take concurrently with fentanyl, antihypertensives, nitrates, alcohol
Client Education
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
Monitor BP for desired effect
Decrease in frequency and severity of angina attacks indicates effectiveness
