BULLYING FEBRUARY 2020 Teaching about bullying is ideally part of a comprehensive safe schools curriculum. Learning about feelings, social interaction, diversity, social structures, discrimination, justice, power and conflict provide opportunities to explore the issue of bullying, why it happens and how to prevent it. Talking and teaching about bullying through everyday opportunities is the best way to make it clear that bullying is never ok. Talking about bullying means it can't be hidden or overlooked in the busy school or family day. Conversations provide opportunities for students to raise issues that adults may not have noticed, and to discuss concerns before they become long-term and entrenched. Objective: By the end of this unit the students will be able to: To enhance student understand of the various types of bullying and its affects. Week Activity Instruction Week 1 Basim’s Scenerio Instruct students to read and reflect on Basim’s scenario and complete the worksheet. Week 2 How does it feel to be verbally Instruct student use powerful words bullied and complete the given words and explain their choice of words. Week 3 Bullying on the play ground Instruct student to describe bullying that they have or heard about on the playground. Also write their Golden rule on the playground. Week 4 Bullying Scenerios Instruct students to read the given scenarios and write how they would respond to them. Basim’s Scenario Scenario: A group of students call Basim ‘fat boy’ whenever he passes them. Think and talk about Nathan’s situation and answer the following questions. 1. What type of bullying is this? 2. How do you think Basim might feel when people call him ‘fat boy’? 3. List some of the effects that the bullying might have on Basim. Think about the effects on Basim at home and at school. 4. If you were Basim, how would you deal with the situation? 5. As Basim’s friend, what are some things you could suggest to him to help stop the bullying? Who could Basim talk to at school? How Does It Feel to Be Verbally Bullied? Bullying on the Playground Instructions: In the first box of the left column, describe bullying you have seen or heard on the playground. Please do not mention names. Bullying Scenarios Read each scenario and and vote on whether they are ‘Not Bullying’ or ‘bullying’ or ‘cyber-bullying’ behaviours. Scenario You create a fake email address for the new kid in school, and use it to send rude emails to other people in the class. You take the diary out of someone’s bag and read it together with other learners in the class. On your way to school each day, someone grabs your bag from you and throws it on the ground. You and a few of your friends are going to the mall after school to play games, but you don’t invite one of your friends. Someone creates a website about another student that criticises the way she looks, and many people in the class post mean comments about her on the website. You are playing a game and one of your friends is rude and bossy during the game. It really annoys you. Someone finds a picture of you on Facebook, anonymously prints it out, and posts it around the school with the word ‘ugly’ written below it. You tease a classmate all the time about having ugly and worn out clothing. You send anonymous text messages to someone, pretending to be their friend. You intimidate one of the shy girls in your class to do your homework by saying that you will tell everyone she is poor if she doesn’t do your work. You tease your best friend, but she is not hurt and she also laughs with you. You take a goofy picture of yourself and send it to your friend as a funny way of saying hi. Your friend continuously phones a classmate to make offensive comments, and you laugh without doing anything to stop her. You have been receiving mean text messages from several classmates making fun of you. You know some of the bullies but you don’t report them because they said they would beat you up if you did. Answer
