What This Module is About
You have learned facts in the lower grades about types of weather, how to measure
weather components, characteristics of some of its disturbances, their patterns and why we
have seasons. In this grade level, this module presents one of the weather disturbances that
take place in the Philippines every year -Typhoon. You will also learn to trace not only the
PAR but as well as the paths of typhoons that enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility using
a map and tracking data.
What I Need to Know?
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Trace the path of typhoons that enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)
using a map and tracking data.
i
How to Learn from this Module
To achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the following:
•
Take your time reading the lessons carefully.
•
Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities, and exercises diligently.
•
Answer all the given tests and exercises.

What Is It
Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)
This is the lowest and inmost monitoring domain, whose boundary is closest to the
archipelago. Exact dimensions of this domain are the realm of the Western Pacific confined
by imaginary lines connecting the coordinates: 5°N 115°E, 15°N 115°E, 21°N 120°E, 25°N
135°E and 5°N 135°E. The western boundary of the PAR is much closer to the coastline of
the country than the eastern boundary. On the other hand, the eastern PAR boundary is
several hundred kilometers off from the closest coastline within the eastern a part of the
country and completely encloses the East Philippine Sea. Tropical Cyclones inside the PAR
permits the issuance of Severe Weather Bulletin, the very best level of cautioning information
issued for tropical cyclones.

Typhoon Ambo
On May 14, 2020 Typhoon Vongfong made landfall within the Philippines around 12:15
PM standard time (0415 UTC), within the municipality of San Policarpo, Eastern Samar
Province. Just after touching inland, the typhoon carried 1-minute sustained winds of around
185 km/hr (115 mph), a category-3 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale in keeping with the Joint
Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC).
Before entering the Philippines Sea north of Luzon, Vongfong (locally called Ambo)
rendered important impacts in numerous provinces within the country, including damaging
winds, flooding and landslides. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical
Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal advisories up to level
3 (on a scale of 1 to 5), affecting several provinces within the country. As of May 18, the
National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that 218,000 people
were laid low with the event, while over 136,000 were evacuated. The typhoon left a minimum
of 5 dead, and quite 50 injured in line with media reports. Relief efforts are ongoing and it will
take time to assess the entire scope and severity of the event.

Activity 4 – Jingle Making
Instruction: Make a 5-sentence Jingle about a certain typhoon you heard or
experienced. Write it on your activity notebook.

Summary
The Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) is the tiniest and innermost monitoring
domain, whose border is closest to the archipelago. Its accurate scopes of this domain are the
world of the Western Pacific constrained by imaginary lines linking the coordinates: 5°N 115°E,
15°N 115°E, 21°N 120°E, 25°N 135°E and 5°N 135°E. The western boundary of the PAR is
closer to the coastline of the country than the eastern boundary. The eastern PAR boundary
is several hundred kilometers far from the closest coastline within the eastern a part of the
country and completely encloses the East Philippine Sea. Tropical Cyclones inside the PAR
authorize the issuance of Severe Weather Bulletin, the best level of cautionary information
issued for tropical cyclones.
