The flow meter is a type of device that is used to measure the amount of liquid or gas that
moves through a pipe. This is commonly referred to as the flow rate. The applications of flow
measurement are diverse and every situation features its own engineering requirements and
limitations. Depending on the industry, various terms are used to refer to a flow meter and they
range from flow gauges to liquid meters.
Measuring the flow of fluids is often an important parameter in several processes. It is
associated with asset management, tank balancing and maintaining fluid motion. Some
applications need the ability to carry out accurate measurements because of their extensive
influence on product quality, safety, health and overall profitability. In some cases, inaccurate

A manometer is a device to measure pressures. A common simple manometer consists of
a U shaped tube of glass filled with some liquid. Typically the liquid is mercury because of its
high density.
An orifice meter is a piece of equipment used to measure the flow rate of a gas or a fluid. It
mainly consists of an orifice plate, an orifice plate housing, and a meter tube.
A rotameter is a device that measures the volumetric flow rate of fluid in a closed tube. It
belongs to a class of meters called variable-area flowmeters, which measure flow rate by
allowing the cross-sectional area the fluid travels through to vary, causing a measurable effect.
A flow control valve regulates the flow or pressure of a fluid. Control valves normally respond
to signals generated by independent devices such as flow meters or temperature gauges.
