Oceanography Unit 1 Vocabulary Tests - A procedure for critical evaluation; a means of determining the presence, quality, or truth of something; a trial. Data - Individual facts, statistics, or items of information. Error -A misconception resulting from incorrect information Logic - Reason or sound judgment, as in utterances or actions. Evidence - That which tends to prove or disprove something; ground for belief; proof. Scientific Method - A method of research in which a problem is identified, relevant data are gathered, a hypothesis is formulated from these data, and the hypothesis is empirically tested. Hypothesis - A testable educated guess, prediction, generalized observation, or untested explanation. Theory- A well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world. Observation - The act of making and recording a measurement. Pre-lab - Before lab; preparation. Procedures - A series of steps taken to accomplish an end Base Unit - a fundamental unit of measurement which are used to form other, compound units for other quantities.
