1. The steelwork framing plan for a floor system shows decks as D1-D12, beams and girders as M1M20 and columns as C1-C9. The unit load on the system is 75-psf dead and 45-psf live.
What is the total load going into column C2?

2. The floor diaphragm below is subjected to a N-S load across the top edge (40’) of 900 plf, and has
the five lateral braces indicated.
a) If the floor diaphragm is of timber construction, what is the maximum load on any of the
lateral braces?
b) If the floor diaphragm is made of reinforced concrete, what is the maximum load on any of
the lateral braces?

3. A 30 ft tall column has a cross section of 8” x 8” with 1” thick walls, (i.e., it has a 6” x 6” hole
in the middle). The material has a Young’s Modulus E = 2,000,000 psi, and an axial yield
stress of 1600 psi. Using a crushing FOS of 1.67 and a buckling FOS of 1.9, compute the
following:
a) What is the LARGEST axial load this column can sustain?
b) If the column is braced (in both directions) at 10 feet above the ground, what is the
maximum axial load the column can sustain?

4. A 6 ft long 2” x 12” beam is subjected to a uniform (edge-to-edge) distributed load of 1500 plf.
The material has a Young’s Modulus E = 2,000,000 psi. If the allowed bending stress is 2000
psi, the allowed deflection is L/360 and the allowed shear stress is 250 psi:
a) Is the beam safe in bending?
b) Is the beam safe in deflection for L/360, ( deflDIST = (5 w L4) / (384 E I)?
c) Is the beam safe in shear?

5. A four-story office building is located in a suburban area in California. If the first story is 30 ft,
and the other three are 10 ft, and each floor is 100 ft x 250 ft in plan:
a) What is the LARGEST pressure distribution on a face of the building, (pressure at ground level
and the roof – table attached)?
b) Assuming that the building was built in Miami instead, and has a worst-case pressure
distribution of 45 psf at ground level and 57 psf at the roof, what is the wind force on the
first story (the floor 30 ft above the ground)?
