BAND SAW SAFETY RULES 1. Obtain permission from the teacher before using the band saw. 2. Always be sure safety glasses, long sleeves, and long hair have been taken care of before using the band saw. 3. Make adjustments only when the machine is unplugged. 4. Set upper saw guide ¼ inch or less above the material to be cut. 5. Plan sawing procedure so there may be a maximum of forward feed with a minimum of backing out of cuts. 6. Only the operator is to turn on or off the machine. 7. Hold material securely and at all times keep your fingers at least two inches (2”) away from the blade. 8. Make sure that no one but you is in the safety zone. 9. Stand in front of the machine not to the right. If the blade breaks it could come out to the right. 10. If the blade breaks, first step back, second turn off the machine, third get the teacher. 11. Never back out of long or curved cuts while the saw is running. Turn it off, wait for it to stop, then back out. 12. To keep the blade from twisting or possibly breaking when cutting curves first cut a series of relief cuts. This will relieve the strain on the blade in a tight curve. 13. As you are cutting, if you get off your line or something isn’t going right, don’t panic. Hold the wood still, turn off the machine, wait for it to stop, and then get help from the teacher. 14. Remove small blocks or scrap material only after the machine is turned off and comes to a complete stop. 15. Once you are finished, shut off the power and do not leave the machine until the blade has completely stopped. 16. If at any time you are unsure about what you are doing on the band saw, turn it off and ask the teacher for help.
