• 82 percent of the total population in the United Kingdom are living in
urban areas, making it one of the world’s most urbanised countries.
This trend is particularly evident in high-income countries like the UK
based on the 2018 report of the UN World Urbanisation Prospects. It
can be noticed on the map above (left) that there is an uneven
distribution of the UK urban population. Densely populated areas are
typically located in the southeastern portion of the UK, while in some
areas, it is sparsely populated (i.e. Northern Scotland). Usually, major
cities in the UK are located in flat, low-lying, densely populated areas
near major rivers or coastal areas. The UK’s population density stands
at 260 people per sq. m. In London, it is at 5,000 people per sq. m. H
