Data-driven graphics make it possible to produce multiple versions of an image quickly and accurately. For example, you can produce 100 versions of an ID with different text and images, all based on a template design. In doing Rec & Sec work, this is most commonly used in making IDs and certificates for a large number of people. 1. LEARN the process of utilizing both softwares in aiding Rec OBJECTIVES & Sec work, particularly in transferring data from excel sheets to photoshop 2. APPLY these skills in real life situations when needed in a Rec & Sec position 1. Label column headers in Excel 2. Create your base design/template in Photoshop (or request through CRF) 3. Organize and label your layers 4. Define variables in Photoshop 5. Import data files 6. Create folders 7. Process images to .psd 8. Process images to .jpeg or .png PROCESS 1. Label column headers in Excel With the data you need, give the column headers simple names 1. Label Column Headers STEPS (1) The column headers of excel data should match the text layer it corresponds to EX. "First_Name" , "Position_TeamName" (2) Use underscores instead of spaces (3) Make sure not to use "Name" as a header in the sheet and a text layer name Save the file as either .csv or .txt 2. Create your design Make a general design template or request one using the CRF 3. Organize and label your layers Name your layers in Photoshop in correspondence with the data in excel that you have WINDOW > LAYERS 4. Define variables in Photoshop Make each replaceable text layer into a variable which you can change (1) Image > Variables > Define 4. Define variables in Photoshop STEPS A dialog box will apprear and click on the drop down box and select the layer to be defined (2) Select "Text Replacement" (3) Name the variable the same as the selected layer (ex. If the layer is "First_Name" then the variable we define it as should be "First_Name" as well (4) Name all the layers whose contents you want to change 5. Import data files Import the file (.csv or .txt) to Photoshop and see the set of data imported 5. Import data files STEPS (1) Image > Variables > Define (2) Select "Import" and choose the .csv or .txt file (3) Choose "Automatic" (4) Select "Use first column for Data Set Names" Note: Click the preview to see what happens when the data set is changed and what each data set contains 6. Create Folders Create folders for (1) .psd files and (2) .jpeg files 7. Process images to .psd From the template and the data that you have, save the files as .psd first 7. Process images to .psd STEPS (1) File > Export > Data Set as Files (2) Select the download location and the file naming (3) Click okay Note: In this step, your files are only saved as .psd 8. Process images to .jpeg From the psd you have saved, you can now save those as jpeg files (1) File > Scripts > Image Processor 8. Process images to .jpeg STEPS (2) Click on "Select folder" and choose the folder that contains all the .psd (3) Select folder destination, choose the folder made for .jpeg files (4) Save the files as .jpeg (5) Click "run" .psd .jpeg 1.
