I.
I have chosen the assignment topic on persuading my boss for a pay raise and or
promotion at work. I have decided on this topic, because I have a true connection to
the subject matter. I have done extensive research on the matter. Once I have proven
my credibility for making such an argument, my boss will be persuaded to approve
my request for a pay raise. My ability to acclimate and adjust quickly, in addition to
rational and sound judgement, ability to use common sense, communication skills
,thirst for self and team improvement, documented receipts of my accomplishments,
contributions to this company, all while pursuing an Associate’s Degree in
Information Technology and Networking as a full time student. Any employer that
truly values his or her employees for their work and for all they would continue to
bring to the company, will approve this request.
II.
Ethos. As you know I have been in the hospitality industry since 2004. I was hired as
a Front Desk Agent at the Casa Grande Suites Hotel in South Beach. During my
training, I realized just how much I did not know about hospitality, guest needs or the
accommodation of the hotel property including guest rooms, features and services
provided. That’s when a position as the bellman became available.. I shared my
concern and suggestion to my hiring manager. He agreed with my suggestions and
make temporary changes in the staff to make me a bellman. After a few weeks on the
floors dealing with guests, I was transferred back to the front desk. This is a
recollection of events to illustrate the type of employee and person I am. Personally
and professionally, You and I have been colleagues in the past at other properties,
therefore you know what I bring to the table and all that I am capable of in this

capacity. You know my knowledge of this industry and have witnessed my ability to
influence others and bring a since of comradery to a team. My willingness to assist in
any department is unmatched. I also have cross trained knowledge in various
departments from Concierge and Reservations to cleaning rooms and/or delivering ice
to a guest. I have been employed at this hotel 3 times now over the past 10 years.
Having said that, I know the weaknesses and the strengths of this property prior to
and after change in ownership. Did you know that during the sale of the hotel, the
new owner knew me personally, by name? This was possible due to TripAdvisor as
he read reviews from past guests of the hotel. Obviously, I have a great rapport with
guests. Some would say I’ve gone above and beyond for guests. There was an
instance where we had a guest who was in a wheelchair and we didn’t have a working
ramp for her to enter the hotel. Always resourceful and being the Army veteran that I
am, I made a command decision and used the available resources at my disposal. I
simply grabbed a plywood and made a ramp for her until the workers made existing
ramp available again. To be clear, I am not suggesting this was done on purpose. I
should also point out that this was an oversight due to the ongoing renovations at the
time.
III.
Pathos. While there are those who could easily turn off work the moment they clock
out. I can honestly say, I am not one of those people. I believe in sticking to your
word. I am a strong believer in taking ownership of tasks assigned to me. I think
outside the box. I like to see situations from the guest’s perspective. By the way, I am
no pushover. I cannot and will not be easily fooled. I am very aware of what we do.
This is a customer service-oriented company. However, at the end of the day, it’s a

business. I can boast about the notion that I once had a follower base here at the hotel.
I’ve had guests from other hotel properties switch to stay at this property, all because
I was now working there. Customers who feel like they have someone who will look
out for them will in turn show their appreciation in returning as repeat guests or from
gratuities in recognition a great service you provided.
IV.
Logos. My experience, rapport with guests and influence with colleagues has value
and deserves acknowledgement. Furthermore, it has value worth more than just a pat
on the back. At the end of the day, how does it appear when there are employees that
don’t give a fraction more of effort than I do and basically have the same title and
possibly the same pay as me. There are some who just started in the industry and
make a dollar less than I do. Most employers are always saying salary will be based
on experience. Yet, I seem to be making on a dollar more than I made the last time I
was here in 2015. That was five years ago. Even though, I still signed on to rejoin the
company, one still cannot overlook that I am underpaid for what I know and that I
have continued to prove my worth to this hotel. I am always spitting ideas that will
benefit everyone, both guests and staff. I am currently in school as an IT student. Just
think of what I can incorporate into the workplace from all the things I have learned.
If you sit back and consider how it feels to be in the same position for too long, how it
can start to have a negative impact in the performance and overall attitude of
someone. There are many times, I’ve thought to myself how in the world am I
making the same amount as the just enough to get by co-worker. In a time where the
cost of living is on a steady rise, especially in Miami. Yet, I still spend my money on
ride-sharing services, because I cannot afford a car. Yet, I see the owners drive a

Porsche. When employees feel appreciated and shown how much they are valued in
terms of a raise or promotion, employees are happier. Happy employees make happy
customers which could only prove beneficial to all parties involved. When other
employees see the possibilities of hard work and putting a bit more effort, it will
spark the desire to want to do more. The verbal praise “we value you as an employee”
starts to lose its value when we see others who do much less and know much less than
others make more money. I have so many ideas that could be implemented with this
company to deal with some of the negative responses from guests. I am more than
willing to share these ideas, only because I’m confident they will be work and want
us a team to succeed.
V.
In conclusion, granting me such a promotion and/or raise will allow me to better
assist you in team building. I can better influence those under me and share my
knowledge in various departments within the company. This will give you the
opportunity to focus on more important aspects of the hotel, in turn, making yourself
more valuable to the owners. Lastly, once this happens, it will generate a level of
morale and improvement in job performances, thus enabling the hotel and employees
to be better equipped in creating incredible guest experiences to our guests.
