The Seven Activities of Living Things Some animals do this slowly and others do it very fast. Even plants do this, such as when they open and close their petals, or turn to face the sun. All living things can make more of themselves. Plants and animals respond to things that happen around them. Plants are sensitive to light, for example. Animals are sensitive to many things: light, sound, smells, and more. Living things start off small and get bigger! All living things need to get energy from the oxygen and nutrients they take in. All living things (even plants) have to get rid of waste, such as moisture (sweat) and going to the toilet! All living things need to take substances from their environment to obtain energy, to grow and to stay healthy. by Dr. A. George
