Analogy of a cell –
McDonald’s Corporation
The nucleus…
• …is like Head Office
• HO decides what happens within the
company and sends out information
– E.g. the recipes that everyone employed at
McDonald’s has to follow
Ribsomes & RER…
• Ribosomes are the
factories that produce the
materials used by
McDonald’s – burgers,
buns, etc
• Rough Endoplasmic
Reticulum is a
business park where
many factories are
grouped together
SER
• Dairy supply chain
• McFlurrys, milk &
milkshakes
SER can also be compared to…
• A printer that prints off
advertising materials
which are like ‘messages’
to the general public
• This is because SER
produces steroid
hormones which are used
to send ‘messages’
around the body
Cilia
• Cilia could be
compared to the
press office
• Just as cilia helps to
move dirt/dust etc
across the top of the
cell, those working in
the press office are
busy making sure any
bad press doesn’t
stick!
Golgi…
• Delivery vans
(vacuoles budding off)
• Delivery service,
putting address labels
onto items and
making sure they get
to where they need to
go
– E.g. Irn-Bru to Scottish
restaurants, the
McAloo Tikki burger to
India
Lysosomes
• Waste disposal
• Bins, cleaners and
lorries that remove
the rubbish, such as
litter and out-of-date
food
Mitochondria
• The energy
companies used by
McDonald’s for
electricity and gas
• Provides the power
needed to run the
offices, factories,
delivery services and
restaurants
Cytoskeleton
• This is like the
structure/materials of
restaurants (‘skeleton’
of the restaurant).
• This is because it
provides a framework
for the cell just as the
building materials
provide a framework
for the restaurant.
Cell membrane
• PR & Supplies
• Responsible for getting
the raw materials, e.g.
beef, flour, plastics etc
• Allows communication
with other businesses
• Refuses entry to
members of the
competition
