California Becomes the First State In The USA To Ban Sales of Animal-Tested Products
On 31st August the California Senate and Assembly passed the California Cruelty-Free
Cosmetics Act which bans the sale of any cosmetic product test on animals in California. The
bill states: “Notwithstanding any other law, it is unlawful for a manufacturer to import for
profit, sell, or offer for sale in this state, any cosmetic, if the cosmetic was developed or
manufactured using an animal test that was conducted or contracted by the manufacturer, or
any supplier of the manufacturer, on or after January 1, 2020.” The bill was introduced by
California Senator Cathleen Galgiani and co-sponsored by the Physicians Committee for
Responsible Medicine. If Bill signed into law Governor Jerry Brown, then California would
join the European Union, Switzerland, Israel, India, and other countries that have banned or
restricted animal testing on cosmetics.
