Making Models of the Brain
The human brain has three main parts—the cerebrum, the cerebellum,
and the brain stem. In this activity, you will create a model of the brain
and learn about the functions of each part.
INQUIRY FOCUS Make Models
Procedure
1. In this activity, you will use the illustration of the
human brain in your student edition as a guide for
making a model of the brain out of clay.
2. Use different colors of clay to represent the brain
stem, the cerebrum, and the cerebellum.
Materials

white paper
3. On a sheet of paper, create a color key to go with your
model. On the key, indicate the part of the brain that each color represents and
indicate the processes each part of the brain controls.
Think It Over
Name one thing you could change in your model to make it a better representation
of the brain.
Think of an action or process, such as looking up something on the Internet, playing
a team sport, or sitting down to a meal. Write a brief description of how the different
parts of the brain work together to help the person accomplish the task.
