Summary
I.1 Values Education of Human Solidarity
Human Solidarity is founded on mutual respect of each other’s uniqueness, and a deep sense of
appreciation of our common humanity. We are sisters and brothers within one human family inhabiting
planet Earth, our home and our heritage. The need for mutual respect becomes all the more imperative.
Dialogue between cultures appears to be one of the fundamental cultural and political challenges for the
world today.
Human solidarity is likewise fostered by the realization and strengthening of the ties that bind us
together in our common humanity: our human nature and the human condition, our common habitat and
destiny, our universally-shared value. “We have one world, or none at all;” words from Jerry and Pat
Mische. Their messages of global solidarity, global spiritually, and our common humanity, out
interconnectedness with each other and with our planet earth and beyond, reaching the future
generations, shall remain with us forever.
But by values education we do not mean merely teaching about values but rather learning how to value,
how to bring knowledge into deeper level of understandings and insights; into the affective realm of our
feelings and emotions, our cherished choices and priorities into loving and appreciating, and how to
internalize and translate them into our behavior. Thus, values education is a holistic process and a total
learning experience.
I.2 The Song of Roland
“The Song of Roland” is an epic poem and, as such, deals with the heroic deeds of great men. It was
written in the Medieval Period A. D. 450-1300. The characters are Roland, the hero in the story,
Emperor Charlemagne, the French emperor, King Marsilion, the ruler of Saracens, Ganelon,
Roland’s stepfather and the traitor in the story, Oliver, Roland’s friend, Blancadrin, one of the
Saracens and Charlemagne and King Marsilion army. As far as I understand the story, Roland is
the one who lead the rearguard army of Charlemagne to battle against the King Marsilion’s
Saracens. They had a battle for 3 night and 3 daylight and at the end Charlemagne’s army won even
though they are lesser than the number of King Marsilion’s Saracens. Roland died because he blew
the oliphant with all his remaining strength and then his vein on the neck was cut.

Insight/s
II.1
It was a speech of Lourdes Quisumbing, the president of Asia-Pacific Network for International
Education and Values Education (APNIEVE), Philippines. The speech is about how to achieve human
solidarity if we have values education. She also said that, but by values education we do not mean
merely teaching about values but rather learning how to value, how to bring knowledge into deeper level
of understandings and insights; into the affective realm of our feelings and emotions, our cherished
choices and priorities into loving and appreciating, and how to internalize and translate them into our
behavior. Thus, values education is a holistic process and a total learning experience. And that’s my
favorite part on her speech. It is not about teaching the values but learning how to value so we can have
the human solidarity. We also need to respect everyone and appreciate their cultures instead of insulting
or laughing at them.
II.2
The song of Roland is an interesting story for me and it is about fighting for religion and territory. It
show the characteristics of a great leader and a hero. It also showed jealousy, greed for territory and
being a traitor. The song of Roland can be related to latest problems in our country especially in our
political situations.

Implication
The article made me realize that we need to learn values to have human solidarity. Imagine our world
without solidarity, everyone is fighting and there is no unity, I am really sure that we will never have a
peaceful life. In every aspect of life, we need solidarity because everyone needs a peaceful life. We
should learn to respect others culture especially their tradition in their religion instead of laughing or
questioning of what are they doing. To have a human solidarity, we need to start it first in our daily
lives, solidarity in the family, at school and in the community before achieving the solidarity in the
whole nation.
The Song of Roland gave me a great impact upon reading the story. It shows different characteristics
that we should avoid in life like betrayal or being traitor. On the other hand, it also showed the
characteristics of Roland that we should possess too as a citizen to be a leader in the community.
