It contains genetic material, which controls the cell. ribosomes Where energy for the cell is released by respiration. cytoplasm Helps plant cells keep their shape. nucleus Where light energy is absorbed for photosynthesis to make food for plants. chloroplast Jelly like substance and where most of the chemical reactions take place. mitochondria Controls what enters and leaves the cell. cell wall © www.teachitscience.co.uk 2016 Fills with cell sap to keep plant cells shape. 26947 Page 1 of 3 Cell organelle card sort Answers cell wall Helps plant cells keep their shape. cell membrane Controls what enters and leaves the cell. cytoplasm Jelly like substance and where most of the chemical reactions take place. nucleus It contains genetic material, which controls the cell. vacuole Fills with cell sap to keep plant cells shape. mitochondria Where energy for the cell is released by respiration. chloroplast Where light energy is absorbed for photosynthesis to make food for plants. ribosomes Where proteins are synthesised (made). © www.teachitscience.co.uk 2016 26947 Page 2 of 3 Cell organelle card sort Teaching notes The activity could be used in a variety of ways: individual card sort give each student a card and get them to find their two partners put students into groups of two or three. Give one student the picture cards and the answer sheet. They show the others a picture card. The pair should then name and describe the organelle indicated. The activity could be differentiated by giving the students the answer table with some of the names and/or descriptions missing. The missing sections could be given to them on cards to fill in the table. For more able students simply give them the answer table with just one section filled in for each row. Some of the organelles are common to both plant and animal cells, so the extra cards below could be introduced as well. nucleus cytoplasm © www.teachitscience.co.uk 2016 mitochondria 26947 cell membrane ribosomes Page 3 of 3
