MADISON HOMES BRINGS URBAN DOWNTOWN STYLING
UPTOWN WITH AYA’S MODERN EXOTIC DOOR STYLE!
When building their new Toronto Décor Center in uptown North York, Madison Homes wanted to break out the traditional single
family kitchen mold with a bold new look. With luxurious finishes being incorporated throughout the space, the kitchen needed
to be spectacular to stand out. AyA’s Stratus Natural Wenge door was just the ticket – the strong horizontal lines combined with
the depth and richness of the Natural Wenge veneer creates a sleek, modern room. The lustrous stainless steel appliances framed
by 1 ¼” thick panels further emphasize the contemporary lines of the cabinetry. Inconspicuous brushed nickel tab pulls and the
wrap around 3” thick marble counter top are indicative of the stylized minimalism of this design.

URBAN GLASSWORKS
The built-in paneled fridge coupled with extending the granite counter top up the
backsplash creates a visual continuity to the back wall – an important element
when dealing with a spatially challenged kitchen! Building on the theme of continuity, a matching suspended lighting platform with recessed halogens was constructed over the island – complimenting the extended lighting platform at the top
of the upper cabinets.
Pots and pans drawers, cube storage, and 24” deep cabinets on the back of this
well crafted island maximize storage. A standard height table attached to the end
of the island is not only a fantastic seating solution, but is also the perfect space
saving solution!
A SPATIALLY CHALLENGED KITCHEN, BECOMES AN AWARD
WINNING DESIGN WHEN THIS COUPLE TEAMS UP WITH AYA
DOORS IN THIS COLLECTION:
It was all about style for this European couple close to retirement and building their dream home. Many trips back to Europe had
given the couple a love for a more sleek and modern design; the only catch was that it still needed to be warm and inviting – the
result was an NKBA award winning kitchen. The Manhattan Espresso Maple door was used to achieve the simplicity and warmth
they desired. The inclusion of asymmetrically placed Stanton frosted glass doors added a particularly modern touch – giving both
visual interest and functionality to the space. The relatively small space limited the number of choices for cabinet placement, and
necessitated extending the upper cabinets to 42”. This detail was enhanced with exaggerated brushed stainless steel pulls to
highlight the tall cabinet doors.

WHEN A TORONTO CHEF TEAMED UP WITH
AYA, IT WAS A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
When a chef sets out to create the ideal kitchen, functionality invariably tops the list of must-haves. Initial layouts confirmed that the
kitchen space was too restrictive for an island. “We opted for a bar,
and by raising the bar to a height of 42 inches, we established a
subtle defining point between the kitchen and dinning room,” states
Five Doors North owner and executive chef Vito Rizzuto.
Storage became the next major design hurdle. The solution focused on
extra cupboard and drawer space positioned under the counter tops.
“Although the Rizzutos chose ceiling-high cabinetry, that arrangement
didn’t prove sufficient for the industrial-size pots, pans and skillets, as
well as everyday dishes and cutlery they need,” designer and owner
of AyA Kitchens Gallery Randy Albert says.
Honey Cherry Sedona cabinets were chosen for their warmth and
contemporary lines, accented with brushed-steel hardware and antislam Tandem drawers. The menu at Five Doors North, is based on
simplicity and freshness, Mr. Rizzuto points out. “That same simplicity
extends to our home-kitchen design. In my view, there’s nothing more

unsightly than clutter.”
V I TO R I Z Z U T O
“With definite ideas about what
we wanted in a modern home
kitchen, the first challenge was
finding a designer on our wavelength,” says chef Vito Rizzuto.
A friend referred him to Randy
Albert, owner of AyA Kitchens
Gallery, and a former cook. “He
understood our goals – plenty of
counter top space and a logical
flow to the kitchen work area.
We are kindred spirits.”

accompanying finishes. The river rock back splash behind the slide in range adds an additional element of texture – important when dealing with a primarily monochromatic space.
Dramatic recessed lighting and under cabinet lighting add both important task and ambient
lighting to the kitchen. As this space is small, storage was a major concern. The cabinets were
extended to the ceiling which allows for maximum storage capabilities. The single undermount
sink installed diagonally in the corner increases the usable counter space. The use of pot and
pan drawers, drawer banks and pull out spice racks give way to not only additional storage
but also ease of use. Both form and function are given an equal opportunity in this kitchen!

COZY COMFORT
A kitchen in the Beaches gets a new lease on life! This small
dysfunctional kitchen was in a sad state… that was until one
of AyA’s talented Kitchen Designers got involved!
Many challenges were addressed in this lovely character home in Toronto’s Beaches
neighbourhood. One challenge was to incorporate existing architectural features into
the overall design. An early 1900’s stained glass window was framed into the cabinetry using a curved window valence and a fixed shelf with light valence to bridge the
adjacent cabinets. The use of the existing single hung window to the right of the slide
in range allows for a bevy of natural light to flow into the space, preventing this small
kitchen from becoming dark and cavernous.

When the Healy family arrived at AyA’s Mississauga showroom they
started down a path that lead them to the kitchen of their dreams. With
visions of a warm yet elegant space for their family of six, the challenge
was to balance the functionality of the space with the aesthetics of the
room.
The Ascot Clove Maple door was the perfect choice to meet this
challenge – classic yet contemporary. With nine foot ceilings, 42”
high upper cabinets were combined with a furring panel and large
traditional crown moulding to extend the materials tight to the ceiling.
The double stacked upper angled corner cabinets added counter level

Baked Polenta with Goats Cheese
Ingredients
• 1/2 box of Beretta Gran Polenta Express
• 2 liters of chicken stock
• 1 whole egg beaten
• 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
• 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
• 6 1/4 inch thick slices snow goats cheese
• 1/2 cup Sun dried tomatoes in olive oil (diced)
• 3/4 cup pesto
• mixed greens
Yields 6 portions

• 12 to 14 Large Ripe Plum Tomatoes
• 3/4 cup red wine vinegar
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1 red chili pepper (adjust to your liking)
• 1lb Large squid- serves 4 as an appetizer
Jam refrigerates and freezes very well
Method
In a large pot of boiling water blanch the
tomatoes for 30 seconds and immediately
refresh in an ice bath, once refreshed peel
the skin from the tomatoes and cut into quarters. Place the tomatoes, vinegar, sugar and
chili peeper in a pan on medium high heat,
once the liquid comes to a boil reduce heat
to a simmer for approximately 1 hour or until
the tomatoes break down and the liquid has

grill. Serve the grilled calamari with a ramekin of the chili jam. Garnish the plate with a
tablespoon of pesto to complement the jam
Method
In a small bowl mix the egg, parmesan and olive oil and
set aside. Bring the chicken stock to a boil, add the polenta
in a steady stream while mixing with a whisk to avoid lumping. Reduce heat to medium and continue to cook for 5
minutes stirring regularly, remove pot form heat and stir in
the cheese mixture. When incorporated season to taste and
pour the polenta into a 9x12 baking dish, allow to cool to
room temperature then refrigerate until cold-4 to 5 hours.
When cold portion the polenta into 3 inch discs, place
on a parchment lined baking sheet. Spread a thin layer
of pesto and diced sun dried tomatoes on each portion of
polenta, place goat cheese disc on each piece of polenta.
Place baking sheet in a preheated 400 degree oven for
10 to 12 minutes or until cheese is lightly browned. Place
a small amount of mixed greens on each plate and transfer
a piece of the baked goats cheese polenta in the center of
each plate. Garnish each serving with 2 tablespoons of
